Calories to Lose a Pound Calculator
The number of days a daily calorie deficit takes to lose your target weight.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool multiplies the pounds you want to lose by a fixed 3,500 kcal per pound, then divides by your planned daily deficit: total deficit = pounds × 3500 and days = total deficit / daily deficit. Pounds is the amount of weight to lose (not your current weight) and the daily deficit is in kcal per day, meaning the calories you plan to burn minus the ones you eat. Both values must be above zero. The days figure is shown to two decimals and is not rounded up to whole days. The 3,500 value is a rule of thumb; it does not adjust for changes in metabolism over time.
Worked example
You want to lose 10 lb with a daily deficit of 750 kcal. Step 1: total deficit = 10 × 3500 = 35,000 kcal. Step 2: days = 35,000 / 750 = 46.67. The tool shows a total deficit of 35,000 kcal and about 46.67 days, which is a little under seven weeks.
Common mistakes
- Entering your body weight instead of the pounds you want to lose.
- Entering kilograms; the factor 3,500 is per pound, so 4.5 kg must be entered as about 10 lb.
- Entering a daily deficit that is actually your total calorie intake; it must be the gap between what you burn and what you eat.
- Expecting the timeline to be exact; real weight change includes water and slows as the body adapts, so treat the days as a rough plan.

About this calculator
Losing one pound of body fat requires burning roughly 3,500 more calories than you consume, a figure derived from the approximate energy density of adipose tissue. Dividing that total deficit by a chosen daily calorie deficit gives the number of days needed — for example, a 500-calorie daily deficit takes about 3,500 ÷ 500 = 7 days to lose one pound.
This estimate is a widely used planning tool in nutrition and fitness coaching, letting people set a realistic daily calorie target based on a weight-loss timeline, or check how long a given deficit will take to show results. It's an approximation rather than a precise physiological law — actual fat loss varies with metabolism, water retention, and body composition — but it remains the standard rule of thumb used by dietitians, trainers, and calorie-tracking apps. Hall et al. (Lancet, 2011) showed that this static rule overstates long-run change, because energy expenditure adapts as weight changes, so over months real change is slower than this projection.

The deficit field is the gap between what you burn and what you eat, so the tool cannot work unless you already have a maintenance estimate from somewhere else. By this rule a 500 kcal daily gap equals about one pound a week, yet early scale changes include water and the pace usually slows later, as the note about adaptation says. Treat the days figure as a rough planning horizon. What is your target date, and does the daily deficit it implies feel realistic?
