Pet Age Calculator
Approximate human age for your dog or cat based on species, age and (for dogs) breed size.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool uses a simple stepwise approximation, not a biological measurement. The first year counts as 15 human years, the second year adds 9 (total 24 at age 2), and every later year adds a fixed amount: 4 for a cat, and for a dog 4 (small), 5 (medium) or 6 (large). The formula for ages above 2 is human = 24 + (age − 2) × rate. For pets under one year the age is scaled linearly (age × 15), and between one and two years 9 years are added per year beyond the first. The result is rounded to a whole number. Breed, health and lifestyle change real ageing, so treat it as a guide.
Worked example
A 7-year-old large dog. The first two years give 15 + 9 = 24 human years. The remaining 7 − 2 = 5 years are counted at the large-dog rate of 6, which adds 5 × 6 = 30. Total: 24 + 30 = 54. The tool shows 54 human years. The same 7-year-old as a small dog would come out at 24 + 5 × 4 = 44.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying the age by 7, which overstates the age of young pets and understates adult ones compared with this stepwise rule.
- Leaving the size at medium for a large or giant dog, which understates its human age.
- Entering the age in months; the field expects years, so 18 months is 1.5.
- Using the dog table for a cat: cats use a flat rate of 4 after the second year.
About this calculator
This tool converts a dog or cat's actual age into its approximate human-year equivalent, using modern veterinary curves rather than the old "multiply by 7" rule, which is inaccurate because pets mature much faster in their first two years and then age more slowly afterward. For dogs, the calculator also factors in breed size, since small breeds like Chihuahuas tend to live longer and age more slowly in their later years than large breeds like Great Danes, whose life stages compress noticeably.
Owners use it to get an intuitive sense of where their pet stands in life — a 2-year-old cat is already roughly mid-twenties in human terms — which helps with deciding when to start senior-focused vet checkups, diet changes or joint supplements. Veterinarians and pet insurers reference similar age-mapping tables when discussing life-stage-appropriate care with owners.

Think of the number as a rough comparison, not a medical stage. The tool steps through the early years and then adds a fixed amount per year, so a 10-year-old cat comes out at 56 human years. For decisions about diet, check-ups or senior care, your vet's guidance for your animal's breed and condition matters more. What breed and age are you comparing?
