NATO Phonetic Alphabet Converter
How do I spell with the NATO alphabet?
Result
How it is calculated
The tool spells text with the NATO phonetic alphabet. Each letter A to Z is replaced by its code word (A = Alfa, B = Bravo, J = Juliett, X = X-ray) and each digit 0 to 9 by its English word (Zero, One … Nine). Input is converted to upper case first, and the Turkish letters Ç, Ğ, İ, ı, Ö, Ş and Ü are folded to C, G, I, O, S and U. A space becomes a slash, which marks the gap between words. Any other character, such as punctuation or accented letters outside that list, is skipped silently. Blank input returns nothing. The code words are fixed in English, whatever the page language.
Worked example
Spelling "Hello 42": H = Hotel, E = Echo, L = Lima, L = Lima, O = Oscar. The space becomes a slash. The digits 4 and 2 become Four and Two. Joined with spaces, the result is Hotel Echo Lima Lima Oscar / Four Two. Read aloud this way over a noisy line, each letter is hard to confuse with another.
Common mistakes
- Expecting punctuation such as hyphens or @ to be spelled out. They are dropped, so say them separately.
- Typing accented letters outside the Turkish set (é, ñ) and expecting a word. They are skipped, so the spelling has a gap.
- Mixing up the slash with a letter. It only marks a space between words.
- Using local spellings: the official code words are Alfa and Juliett, not Alpha or Juliet, and the tool uses the official forms.
About this calculator
This tool converts any text into the NATO phonetic alphabet, replacing each letter with its standardized code word — A becomes Alfa, B becomes Bravo, C becomes Charlie, and so on through the full 26-letter set — so the text can be spelled out unambiguously over a voice channel. The alphabet was designed so its words remain distinguishable from each other even under poor audio quality, heavy accents or radio static.
It is the standard used by pilots, air traffic controllers, military and emergency services personnel, and maritime radio operators whenever a call sign, code or identifier must be transmitted with zero room for mishearing. Outside those professional contexts, people use it when reading out a serial number, confirmation code, license plate or spelling an uncommon name over the phone, since letters like "B", "D" and "P" or "M" and "N" are easily confused by ear but their phonetic words are not.

For names with Turkish letters, the tool folds them to plain Latin ones, so Şükrü is spelled Sierra Uniform Kilo Romeo Uniform with no sign of the accents. If the diacritics matter, say so out loud after the spelling. The output also writes Nine and Three in full, whereas radio operators often say Niner and Tree. Which names or codes do you most often need to spell over the phone?
