Greek Letter Lookup
Enter a Greek letter name or symbol to look up its form and common use.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool holds a fixed table of the 24 letters of the classical Greek alphabet, in order from alpha to omega. In direction name2sym it lowercases your text, trims spaces and matches it against the English transliterated name (alpha, beta, gamma ... omega). In direction sym2name it matches an exact lowercase or uppercase Greek character. The result gives the lowercase form, the name, the uppercase form, one typical use and the letter's position in the alphabet. An unknown name, the final-sigma form ς, a symbol searched in name mode (or a name in symbol mode) returns no result. The typical use is only one of several: the same letter means different things across fields, so the reading depends on your source.
Worked example
Searching the name lambda in name-to-symbol mode. The table row for lambda gives lowercase λ, uppercase Λ and the use wavelength/eigenvalue. Lambda is the 11th of 24 letters. The tool shows λ (lambda) — uppercase Λ — common use: wavelength/eigenvalue and "letter 11 of 24".
Common mistakes
- Typing a symbol while the direction is set to name to symbol (or a name in symbol mode); the lookup then finds nothing.
- Using other spellings such as alfa, lamda or the Greek names themselves; only the 24 English names are matched.
- Searching the final-position sigma ς, which is a variant of σ in Greek words but is not in the table.
- Treating the listed common use as the only meaning: ρ is density in one text, correlation in another, and μ can be mean, micro or friction.
- Confusing look-alike letters: Greek capital alpha (Α) or omicron (Ο) is not the same character as Latin A or O, so pasting the wrong one gives no match.
About this calculator
Greek letters function as a shared symbolic shorthand across math, physics, engineering, and statistics — α (alpha) for a significance level or angle, β (beta) for a regression coefficient or particle, π (pi) for the circle constant, Δ (delta) for change, σ (sigma) for standard deviation, and dozens more, each with both a lowercase and uppercase form that can carry different meanings.
Students, engineers, and scientists reach for a lookup like this when reading a formula or paper that uses a letter they don’t immediately recognize, or when they need the correct symbol to type into an equation.

The lookup matches exact characters. On many keyboards the micro sign µ is a separate character from Greek mu, and the ohm sign Ω can differ from Greek omega, so pasting them in symbol mode can find nothing. Type mu or omega in name mode instead and copy the letter from the result. Which letters do you look up most, and from which field's notation?
