REM Sleep Estimate Calculator
Enter your total sleep hours and REM percentage to estimate your nightly REM sleep.

How it is calculated
You give total sleep time in hours and the share of it spent in REM as a percentage. If you leave the percentage out, the tool assumes 22%. It computes REM hours = total hours × pct ÷ 100 and REM minutes = REM hours × 60, shown rounded to the nearest whole minute. It also divides the sleep time into 90-minute blocks, cycles = hours × 60 ÷ 90, as a rough count of sleep cycles with one decimal.
Hours must be above zero and the percentage between 0 and 100; anything else gives no result. This is simple proportion arithmetic on the numbers you supply. It does not measure REM and does not check that the percentage is realistic for you.
Worked example
Suppose you slept 7.5 hours and your tracker suggests 22% REM. REM time = 7.5 × 22 ÷ 100 = 1.65 h. Converted to minutes, 1.65 × 60 = 99 min. For the cycle count, 7.5 hours is 450 minutes, and 450 ÷ 90 gives 5.0 cycles. So the estimate is 1.65 h (99 minutes) of REM across about five 90-minute cycles.
Common mistakes
- Entering time in bed rather than time asleep. The percentage applies to the sleep you actually got, so subtract the time spent awake.
- Typing hours and minutes together, such as 7.30 for 7 h 30 min. The field takes decimal hours, so 7 h 30 min is 7.5.
- Using a REM percentage from a different night or device without checking it. The result is only as good as the percentage you enter; leaving it empty means a fixed 22%, not your own figure.
- Treating the cycle count as measured. It is simply total minutes divided by 90, while real cycles vary in length through the night.
- Mixing percent and fraction. Entering 0.22 is read as 0.22%, giving about 1 minute instead of about 99.

About this calculator
REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is the stage most associated with dreaming and memory consolidation, and it typically makes up roughly 20–25% of total sleep time in healthy adults, occurring in cycles of about 90 minutes that repeat through the night with REM periods growing longer toward morning. The actual share varies by age (infants spend far more time in REM), sleep quality, and factors like alcohol or certain medications that suppress it.
This calculator takes your total sleep hours and a REM percentage and estimates how many minutes of REM sleep you're getting on a typical night. Sleep-tracker users cross-checking a wearable's readout, people investigating their own sleep architecture out of curiosity, and sleep-health enthusiasts use it as a quick estimate — not a diagnostic tool, since only a clinical polysomnography study measures REM directly.

Consumer trackers infer sleep stages indirectly from movement and heart rate, so the REM percentage they report is itself an estimate. A single night is noisy; if you want to use this tool well, enter the same tracker's figure across a few nights and compare the trend rather than any one result. The minutes line is easiest to compare. Which tracker or app do you take your REM percentage from?
