Sales Pipeline Coverage Calculator

Enter your quota, win rate and current pipeline to see how much pipeline you need to hit target.

How it is calculated

The tool works backwards from the share of pipeline you usually win. With win rate w as a decimal (25% is 0.25): required pipeline = quota / w, target coverage multiple = 1 / w, current coverage = pipeline / quota, expected closed revenue = pipeline × w, and pipeline gap = required pipeline − current pipeline. The gap is floored at zero, so a pipeline that is already big enough shows $0.00 rather than a negative number. Quota and win rate must be above zero and the win rate can be at most 100; a pipeline of zero is allowed. The win rate is applied as one flat percentage to the whole pipeline, with no weighting by deal stage or age, and amounts are shown in dollars.

Worked example

Quota $500,000, historical win rate 25%, open pipeline $1,500,000. Required pipeline is 500,000 / 0.25 = $2,000,000.00, which is a target multiple of 1 / 0.25 = 4.00x. Current coverage is 1,500,000 / 500,000 = 3.00x. At a 25% win rate the pipeline should close 1,500,000 × 0.25 = $375,000.00, below quota. The gap is 2,000,000 − 1,500,000 = $500,000.00 of extra pipeline to generate.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the win rate as 0.25. The field is a percentage, so 0.25 means a quarter of one percent and the tool asks for 400x coverage.
  • Using the win rate of one-off, low-value deals, or the best quarter, instead of the long-run rate on the same kind of pipeline.
  • Counting stale or early-stage opportunities in the pipeline value. The result is only as good as the pipeline figure, because every dollar is assumed to convert at the same rate.
  • Reading a pipeline gap of $0.00 as proof the quota is safe. The gap is floored at zero, and expected close can still sit below quota if the rate is optimistic.
  • Mixing periods: a yearly quota against a pipeline that is expected to close within one quarter.

About this calculator

Pipeline coverage is the ratio of total open pipeline value to a sales quota, and because not every deal in the pipeline closes, the ratio needs to be well above 1x to be realistic — the actual multiple required is driven directly by your win rate: at a 25% win rate you need roughly 4x quota in pipeline to close the target amount, while a 50% win rate needs closer to 2x, since coverage and win rate are mathematically the inverse of each other.

This calculator takes your quota, win rate, and current pipeline value, then returns the pipeline you actually need, your current coverage ratio, and the pipeline gap between where you stand and where you need to be. Sales managers building the quarterly pipeline plan, revenue operations teams setting pipeline generation targets for marketing and SDRs, and reps forecasting whether they're on track use it to translate a revenue target into a concrete, win-rate-adjusted pipeline number instead of relying on a generic "3x coverage" rule of thumb.

Check how your win rate was measured before trusting the required pipeline. The tool applies the rate to dollars, so a value-based rate (won dollars divided by all dollars that entered the same stage) fits better than one counted by deals, which can differ a lot if your large deals win less often. With the defaults, 25% turns a 1,000,000 quota into 4,000,000 of pipeline. Do you measure win rate by count or by value?
