How it is calculated
Each child counts as half an eater: eaters = adults + 0.5 × children. Then meat = eaters × 250 g × m, sides = eaters × 150 g × m, buns = (2 × adults + 1 × children) × m and drinks = (3 × adults + 2 × children) × m servings, where m is the appetite factor: 0.75 for light, 1.00 for average and 1.35 for hearty. Meat and sides are shown in kilograms to two decimals; buns and drinks are always rounded up to a whole number. The 250 g of meat is a raw-weight figure for one average adult, so bone-in cuts need more. At least one guest is required.
Worked example
12 adults and 5 children, average appetite (m = 1). Eaters: 12 + 0.5 × 5 = 14.5. Meat: 14.5 × 250 g = 3,625 g, shown as 3.63 kg. Sides: 14.5 × 150 g = 2,175 g, about 2.18 kg. Buns: 2 × 12 + 5 = 29. Drinks: 3 × 12 + 2 × 5 = 46 servings. With a hearty appetite everything is multiplied by 1.35: meat becomes 4.89 kg, buns 40 and drinks 63.
Common mistakes
- Counting the host and helpers as extra rather than including them in the adults field; they eat too.
- Treating children as zero or as full adults: the tool counts them as half a portion of meat and sides, and one bun and two drinks each.
- Buying the meat figure in cooked weight; the 250 g per adult is raw weight, and bone-in ribs, wings or chops carry waste that the tool does not add.
- Reading the drinks number as bottles or litres; it is the number of servings, so divide by the serving count of the pack you buy.
- Picking the wrong appetite for the event: a long afternoon party with little else on the menu is closer to hearty than average.
About this calculator
Catering guidelines for a barbecue typically budget around 1/3 to 1/2 pound (150-225g) of raw meat per adult guest as a main. This calculator budgets 250 g of raw meat per adult at an average appetite, counts each child as half an adult, and scales that up or down for the appetite level you choose (light, average or hearty), plus proportional amounts of sides, buns, and drinks. It does not adjust for bone-in cuts, which lose more weight and yield less edible meat than boneless, so buy extra if you are cooking bone-in.
This calculator takes your number of adults, number of children and chosen appetite level and scales meat, side dish, bun, and drink quantities accordingly so you can shop with a clear list. Hosts planning a backyard cookout use it to avoid running short mid-party or over-buying perishables, and caterers and event planners use it as a quick starting estimate before fine-tuning a menu for a specific headcount.

The meat figure is a total, not a quantity per type. If you plan sausages, chicken and steak, split that weight among them instead of buying the full amount of each. For a party of 10 adults at average appetite the tool gives 2.50 kg of meat. It also has no way to remove guests who do not eat meat, so lower the meat line yourself for them.
