Freezer Storage Time Calculator
Pick the food and your freezer temperature to see how many months it stays at good quality, based on USDA storage guidance.

How it is calculated
Each food has a base quality window at −18 °C (0 °F): ground meat 4 months, beef steaks and roasts 12, poultry 9, fish 6, cooked leftovers 3, vegetables 10. The tool then adjusts for your freezer with a simple rule of thumb in which every 10 °C of extra cold doubles the time: months = base × 2^((−18 − T) ÷ 10), with T in °C. Days are months × 30.4375. This temperature factor is the tool's own approximation, not a published figure. Temperatures warmer than −5 °C or colder than −40 °C return no result. The number describes how long quality holds up; food kept frozen is generally still safe afterwards.
Worked example
Fish, freezer set to −24 °C. The base window for fish is 6 months. The freezer is 6 °C colder than −18 °C, so the exponent is (−18 − (−24)) ÷ 10 = 0.6 and the factor is 2^0.6 ≈ 1.516. That gives 6 × 1.516 ≈ 9.1 months. In days, 9.09 × 30.4375 ≈ 277 days. At a standard −18 °C the same fish would keep its quality for 6 months.
Common mistakes
- Entering Fahrenheit. The field is in °C; a typical home freezer is −18, and typing 0 (meaning 0 °F) returns no result.
- Typing the temperature without the minus sign. A freezer at 18 °C is not a freezer, and positive values are rejected.
- Reading the result as an expiry date. It estimates when texture and flavour start to decline; it is not the point where the food becomes unsafe.
- Trusting the display setting instead of a thermometer. Door openings and a full or half-empty chest change the real temperature, which shifts the result.
- Choosing a food class that does not match: a cooked chicken dish belongs under cooked leftovers (3 months), not poultry (9 months).
About this calculator
Frozen food kept at a steady 0°F (-18°C) is safe to eat indefinitely, but its quality — texture, flavor, moisture — steadily declines the longer it sits, which is why USDA FoodSafety.gov publishes recommended storage windows by food type: a few months for something like ground meat or fish, closer to a year for whole cuts of red meat, and even longer for some baked goods, with the exact window varying by food category.
Home cooks use these guidelines when batch-cooking or stocking a chest freezer, because "safe forever" is not the same question as "still tastes good," and freezer burn or texture loss after months in storage can waste food that was technically still safe but no longer worth eating.
This calculator lets you pick a food type and your freezer's temperature and returns how many months it should stay at good quality based on USDA storage guidance, so you can plan freezer meal prep and rotation with realistic expectations.
