Tablespoons to mL Converter

Enter tablespoons to convert to millilitres and teaspoons.

How it is calculated

The tool converts a number of US tablespoons with two fixed factors: mL = tbsp × 14.78676 and tsp = tbsp × 3. Both results are rounded to two decimals. The input can be zero or any positive number, including fractions such as 0.5; a negative value gives no result. The conversion goes in one direction only. To turn millilitres back into tablespoons, divide by 14.78676. The factor is for the US tablespoon, which is half a US fluid ounce. A metric tablespoon of 15 mL, as used in many recipes outside the United States, is slightly larger, so a result in mL here will be a little smaller than the same count of 15 mL spoons. The conversion measures volume only, not weight, and does not depend on the ingredient.

Worked example

A recipe calls for 2.5 tablespoons of oil. Millilitres: 2.5 × 14.78676 = 36.9669, shown as 36.97 mL. Teaspoons: 2.5 × 3 = 7.50 tsp. If the recipe had meant 15 mL metric tablespoons, 2.5 of them would be 37.5 mL, a difference of about half a millilitre, which rarely matters for oil but can for strong spices or baking powder in larger batches.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a tablespoon is exactly 15 mL everywhere. The tool uses the US size, 14.79 mL, so recipes written with 15 mL spoons come out about 1.4% larger than the figure shown.
  • Entering teaspoons or a weight in grams in the tablespoons box. The field counts tablespoons only; 3 teaspoons is 1 tablespoon.
  • Using the result for weight. 36.97 mL of oil, honey and flour all weigh different amounts, because the tool converts volume only.
  • Typing a fraction as text, such as 1/2 or 2 1/2. Use decimals: 0.5 or 2.5.
  • Measuring with a heaped or loosely filled household spoon and treating it as a standard unit. The conversion assumes a level, standard measure.

About this calculator

A US tablespoon is defined as half a US fluid ounce, about 14.7868 mL (3 US teaspoons, or 1/16 US cup), a figure that differs slightly from the 15 mL metric tablespoon used in the UK and most metric countries and clearly from Australia's 20 mL tablespoon, which is why recipe conversions between countries can subtly throw off a dish if the wrong tablespoon size is assumed. This calculator converts one way, from tablespoons to millilitres and teaspoons, using 14.78676 mL per tablespoon; to go from millilitres back to tablespoons, divide by that figure.

Home cooks and professional recipe developers rely on tbsp-to-mL conversion constantly when scaling recipes, converting between US-written and metric-written recipes, or measuring precisely with a graduated kitchen tool instead of a spoon — especially important in baking, where volume accuracy affects results more than in general cooking.

Spoon sizes vary more than you might expect. Australia uses a 20 mL tablespoon, which is about a third larger than the US one used here, so an Australian recipe converted at 14.79 mL per spoon would be well short. Before you convert, look at which country the recipe comes from. Which country's recipes do you cook from most often?
