How do I convert volume units?

How it is calculated

Enter a volume and pick its unit. The tool first converts it to litres, then divides by each target unit's size in litres to show all units at once. Factors used: 1 mL = 0.001 L, 1 m³ = 1,000 L, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L, 1 US quart = 0.946352946 L, 1 US pint = 0.473176473 L, 1 US cup = 0.2365882365 L and 1 US fluid ounce = 0.0295735296 L. The formula is result = value × (litres per input unit) / (litres per output unit).

Gallons, quarts, pints, cups and fluid ounces are the US liquid units, which are smaller than their British imperial namesakes. Each result has two decimals, and values below 1 show more digits.

Worked example

Convert 2 US gallons. In litres that is 2 × 3.785411784 = 7.57 L. From there: 7,570.82 mL, 8.00 qt (7.5708 / 0.946353), 16.00 pt, 32.00 cup and 256.00 fl oz. Each step up or down is a doubling: 1 gallon is 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups and 128 fluid ounces.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a gallon is the same everywhere. A UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 L, but this tool uses the US gallon of 3.785 L.
  • Confusing fluid ounces (volume) with ounces (weight). A fluid ounce of water weighs close to, but not exactly, an ounce.
  • Choosing the wrong input unit and not noticing; the default is litres.

About this calculator

This tool converts a volume between metric units (liters, milliliters, cubic meters) and the US customary units used mainly in cooking, American recipes and packaging (gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces), covering everything from a lab measurement to a recipe's cup.

It is used by home cooks following a US recipe with cups and gallons who need metric equivalents (or the reverse), by people comparing bottled product sizes sold in different countries, and by students and professionals in science, cooking or shipping contexts where volume needs to be converted precisely between systems.

Watch for US versus imperial units when following a recipe or a fuel figure from another country. This tool uses US liquid measures, so a gallon here is 3.785 L, while a UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 L, roughly 20% larger. Metric cups also differ: the US cup used here is about 236.6 mL, not 250 mL. Imperial units are not in the list. Do you need imperial pints or gallons, and for what use?
