Steps to Distance Calculator

Turn your steps into kilometres and calories.

How it is calculated

Distance is km = steps × stride / 1000, where stride is the length of one step in metres. If the stride is empty or not above zero, the tool assumes 0.76 m. Calories use the walking MET formula kcal = 3.5 × weight × hours, where weight is body weight in kilograms (70 kg if left empty or not above zero), 3.5 is the MET value and hours = km / 5, i.e. a moderate 5 km/h pace. Speed and slope are not considered, so treat the result as an estimate. Negative steps return no result. Distance is shown in kilometres with two decimals and calories as a whole number. Your own stride is more accurate than the default: walk a measured 10 m, count the steps and divide.

Worked example

You walked 10,000 steps with a stride of 0.76 m and weigh 80 kg. Distance: 10,000 × 0.76 = 7,600 m, or 7.60 km. Time at 5 km/h: 7.6 / 5 = 1.52 hours. Calories: 3.5 × 80 × 1.52 = 425.6, shown as 426 kcal. At the default 70 kg the same walk would burn fewer calories.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the stride in centimetres (76); the tool expects metres, so the distance comes out 100 times too large.
  • Entering body weight in pounds; the field expects kilograms, so the calories come out too high.
  • Leaving the weight empty and reading the result as your own, when it is calculated for 70 kg.
  • Using a walking stride for a run or a hike on slopes, where steps are longer or shorter and the pace is not 5 km/h.
  • Leaving the stride empty and forgetting that the default 0.76 m may not fit your height.

About this calculator

This calculator multiplies your step count by your stride length (an average of 0.76 m is used if you leave it blank) to estimate distance walked, then converts that distance into an estimated calories burned using your body weight and a standard walking MET (metabolic equivalent) value.

It's used by anyone tracking fitness goals from a step counter or smartwatch that only reports raw steps, people training for a walking event who want to know their actual distance covered, and anyone estimating calorie burn without a dedicated fitness tracker. Because stride length varies by height and pace, the calculator lets you enter your own stride length rather than assuming one fixed number for everyone.

In this tool calories depend only on distance and weight, because the pace is fixed at 5 km/h. That works out to about 0.7 kcal per kilogram per kilometre: roughly 49 kcal for a 70 kg person over one kilometre. To replace the default stride with your own, walk 20 normal steps, measure the distance and divide by 20. What does your step counter report that you wish this page handled?
