Running Energy Cost Calculator

Enter your body weight and running distance to estimate calories burned.

How it is calculated

The estimate multiplies body weight by distance and a fixed energy constant: kcal = weight × distance × 1.036, with weight in kilograms and distance in kilometres. The same constant gives the cost of each kilometre, per km = weight × 1.036. The total is rounded to whole kilocalories and the per-km figure to two decimals.

The constant is 1.036 kcal per kg per km, a little above the round 1 kcal often quoted. Pace, slope, wind, terrain, sex, age and fitness do not enter the formula at all, so running the same distance faster or slower gives the identical answer. Weight and distance must both be above zero. Treat the result as a rough average for flat running, not a measurement.

Worked example

A runner weighing 68 kg runs 8.5 km. Cost per kilometre: 68 × 1.036 = 70.448, shown as 70.45 kcal/km. Total: 70.448 × 8.5 = 598.81, which rounds to 599 kcal. If the same runner had run 10 km the estimate would be about 705 kcal, and running those 8.5 km in a slower or faster time would not change the 599 at all.

Common mistakes

  • Entering body weight in pounds. A person of 150 lb is about 68 kg, and typing 150 makes the result roughly 2.2 times too high.
  • Entering the distance in miles. The constant is per kilometre, so a 5-mile run must be typed as about 8.05 km.
  • Expecting a faster pace to change the calories. Pace is not an input, and this method treats the cost per kilometre as the same at any speed.
  • Using it for hilly, trail or treadmill-with-incline runs without adjusting. The formula assumes the same effort per kilometre, so a steep climb will be underestimated.
  • Reading the figure as extra calories burned beyond what you would burn anyway. It estimates the energy cost of the run itself and cannot be compared with a food log without remembering this.

About this calculator

Running has a remarkably simple, well-documented net energy cost: roughly 1 kilocalorie per kilogram of body weight per kilometer covered, largely independent of pace. This calculator multiplies body weight in kg by distance run in km using a constant of 1.036 kcal/kg/km, which comes from exercise physiology research (Léger & Mercier and related studies) measuring oxygen consumption across running speeds and finding the calories-per-distance relationship stays nearly flat even as speed changes.

Because the rate depends on weight and distance rather than speed, running the same route faster burns essentially the same total calories, just in less time — the practical implication is that if calorie burn is the goal, distance matters more than pace, whereas speed mainly changes how long the workout takes and its cardiovascular intensity.

A handy use is comparing this estimate with the calorie figure from your sports watch after the same run. They may not match, because this tool uses only your weight and the distance, while a watch may also weigh in heart rate, age or elevation. Treat a gap as a reason to prefer one method consistently when you track runs over weeks, rather than as proof either is wrong. What figure did your watch give for a run you also entered here?
