Ham Cooking Time Calculator
Find how long to cook your ham.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool multiplies the weight by a fixed minutes-per-kilogram rate, for an oven at 160 °C (325 °F):
precooked = weight × 35 min and fresh = weight × 48.5 min
weight is in kilograms. The total minutes are rounded to the nearest minute and shown as hours and minutes. Both times are given at once, so you pick the line that matches your ham: a precooked ham is only being reheated, a fresh (raw) one has to be cooked through. The calculation does not look at the shape of the joint, whether it is boneless, or the starting temperature, so treat it as a planning estimate and confirm doneness with a meat thermometer.
Worked example
A 3 kg ham.
- Precooked: 3 × 35 = 105 min = 1 h 45 min
- Fresh: 3 × 48.5 = 145.5 min, rounded to 146 min = 2 h 26 min
At 160 °C, plan about 1 h 45 min if it is precooked and 2 h 26 min if it is raw.
Common mistakes
- Entering the weight in pounds: the rates are per kilogram, so 6.6 lb must be entered as about 3 kg.
- Reading the wrong line: the fresh time is about 38 % longer than the precooked time, so mixing them up leaves a raw ham undercooked or a cooked one dry.
- Entering the weight of the ham plus the glaze or packaging and expecting precision: use the net weight of the meat.
- Relying on the time alone: ovens differ, so check the core temperature before serving.
About this calculator
This calculator estimates ham roasting time at 160°C (325°F) based on weight, using fixed rates of 35 minutes per kg for a precooked ham and 48.5 minutes per kg for a fresh one; both times are shown at once, so you pick the one that matches your ham. A precooked (city) ham only needs reheating to a safe serving temperature of about 140°F (60°C), while a fresh, uncooked ham must be cooked all the way to a food-safe internal temperature of 145°F (63°C) per USDA guidance, which takes considerably longer for the same weight.
Home cooks use it to time holiday roasts for Christmas, Easter, or Thanksgiving so the ham is ready when guests arrive, and caterers use it to schedule oven time across multiple dishes cooking simultaneously.

Work backwards from serving time to decide when the oven goes on. For a 3 kg precooked ham the tool gives 1 h 45 min, so for a 6 pm meal it should be in by about 4:15 pm, earlier if your recipe includes a rest before carving or the ham starts straight from the fridge. The times assume 160 °C, so confirm with a thermometer. Bone-in or boneless, how did your timing compare?
