Conicity Index Calculator
Gauge abdominal fat from waist, weight and height
Result
How it is calculated
The tool computes C = W / (0.109 × √(m / h)). W is waist circumference in metres, m is body weight in kilograms and h is height in metres. The constant 0.109 and the square root of weight over height give the waist a cylinder of that mass and height would have, so C is a dimensionless ratio of your waist to that reference cylinder, shown to two decimals.
All three values must be greater than zero. The tool gives only the number and no category, so you need a published reference table for your age and sex to interpret it. It is a screening-style index, not a diagnosis, and it assumes a body of average density.
Worked example
Waist 0.85 m, weight 75 kg, height 1.75 m. First m / h = 75 / 1.75 ≈ 42.857, and its square root is about 6.5465. Multiply by 0.109: about 0.7136. Then C = 0.85 / 0.7136 ≈ 1.19. This is the waist measurement relative to that of a smooth cylinder of the same weight and height.
Common mistakes
- Typing waist and height in centimetres. Both fields are in metres, so 85 cm is 0.85. Entering 85 and 175 produces a value over a thousand.
- Entering weight in pounds. The field is in kilograms.
- Measuring the waist at an inconsistent place. Use the same landmark each time, otherwise changes in the index may only reflect measuring differences.
- Expecting the index to behave like BMI. It is on a different scale, and typical values are around 1 or a little above rather than 20 to 30.
- Using one reading as a health verdict. The tool outputs a number only and does not diagnose; follow changes over time and discuss them with a clinician.

About this calculator
The conicity index compares your actual waist circumference to the waist a perfect cylinder of your same weight and height would have, using C = waist ÷ [0.109 × √(weight ÷ height)] (waist and height in meters, weight in kilograms). A value near 1.0 means a cylindrical body shape; higher values mean fat is concentrated more like two cones meeting at the waist.
Researchers developed it as a better predictor of cardiovascular risk than BMI, since it specifically isolates central (abdominal) fat — the kind most strongly linked to heart disease and type 2 diabetes — rather than just overall body mass, which BMI can't distinguish from a broad-shouldered, narrow-waisted build.

Since the index uses only waist, weight and height, it knows nothing about age or sex, so it is better for following your own change than for comparing with another person. With a waist of 0.85 m, 75 kg and 1.75 m the result is 1.19. Measure the same way each time. This is a screening-style number, so discuss any concern with a clinician. How are you using the value?
