Adaptive Thermogenesis Estimate Calculator
Enter your starting weight, current weight, and baseline maintenance calories to estimate adaptive thermogenesis.
Result
How it is calculated
This is a rule-of-thumb estimate built on the percentage of body weight lost. weight lost % = (starting − current) ÷ starting × 100, floored at 0 so a weight gain counts as no loss. The assumed slowdown is adaptation % = weight lost % × 0.6, capped at 25%, which is reached at about a 42% loss. Then adapted TDEE = baseline TDEE × (1 − adaptation % ÷ 100) and gap = baseline TDEE − adapted TDEE, both in kcal per day. The two weights only need to share a unit, but each must be between 2 and 650, and the baseline TDEE must be above zero; anything else shows no result. The 0.6 factor and 25% cap are fixed in the tool, not measured from you, and the whole drop is treated as adaptation, including the part that comes simply from being lighter.
Worked example
You started at 100 kg, now weigh 85 kg, and your maintenance before dieting was 2,800 kcal. Weight lost: (100 − 85) ÷ 100 × 100 = 15%. Adaptation: 15 × 0.6 = 9.00%. Adapted TDEE: 2,800 × (1 − 0.09) = 2,548 kcal. Gap: 2,800 − 2,548 = 252 kcal per day. Had you dropped from 100 kg to 50 kg, the 25% cap would apply: 2,100 kcal adapted and a 700 kcal gap.
Common mistakes
- Entering your current maintenance as the baseline; the baseline should be what you needed before the diet, otherwise the slowdown is counted twice.
- Mixing units for the two weights, such as starting in pounds and current in kilograms, which fakes a huge loss.
- Reading the result as the extra slowdown beyond weight loss: this tool applies one percentage to the whole drop and does not separate the effect of being lighter.
- Expecting a result for a weight gain; any gain gives 0.00% adaptation and a gap of 0 kcal.
- Typing a weight of 0 or a figure outside 2–650 and wondering why nothing appears; those inputs are rejected.

About this calculator
Adaptive thermogenesis, also called metabolic adaptation, is the drop in metabolic rate during sustained dieting that goes beyond what would be predicted from weight loss alone — your body burns fewer calories than its new, lower body weight alone would explain, as a survival response to sustained energy restriction.
The phenomenon was documented dramatically in Fothergill et al.'s 2016 follow-up study of Biggest Loser contestants, whose resting metabolic rates remained suppressed years after the show despite substantial weight regain, and it echoes earlier findings from the 1944-45 Minnesota Starvation Experiment. It is a leading explanation for why weight loss commonly plateaus even when calorie intake and activity stay consistent.
This calculator uses a rough rule of thumb rather than a measurement: from your starting and current weight it works out the percentage of body weight you have lost, assumes about 0.6% metabolic slowdown for every 1% lost (capped at 25%), and applies that to your baseline maintenance calories to estimate your adapted calories and the gap.
