Wineglass to Milliliter Converter
Enter a value to convert between wineglasses and milliliters.

How it is calculated
The tool uses one fixed factor, 1 wineglass = 60 mL. Going from wineglasses to millilitres it multiplies, mL = wineglasses × 60. Going the other way it divides, wineglasses = mL / 60. The direction setting chooses which of the two applies, and the second result line shows the same amount converted back as a check.
The wineglass was never a precisely standardised unit. Old recipes and medical instructions meant something that varied by time and country, and 2 fluid ounces is only about 60 mL (a US fluid ounce is a little under 30 mL), so 60 mL is a convention, not an exact historical value. The value cannot be negative, and results are rounded to two decimals. If a recipe depends on exact volume, treat the result as an approximation.
Worked example
An old recipe calls for 2.5 wineglasses of liquid. With the direction set to wineglasses to mL, the tool multiplies 2.5 × 60 = 150. It shows 150.00 mL, which is about 2/3 of a metric cup (250 mL). The check line converts it back: 150 / 60 = 2.50 wineglasses. In the other direction, entering 150 mL gives the same 2.50 wineglasses.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the direction on the wrong setting. If you enter 150 meaning mL while it is set to wineglasses to mL, you get 9,000 mL.
- Assuming the wineglass is the same as a modern wine glass. A modern wine glass holds several times 60 mL; the old measure is a small fixed volume.
- Treating 60 mL as exact for every old source. The old unit varied by country and period, so the conversion is a standard approximation.
- Confusing it with a teacup, tumbler or cup in the same book. Old recipes used each term for different sizes, and this tool converts only the wineglass.
- Entering a negative number. The tool only accepts zero or positive values.
About this calculator
The wineglass is an old English cooking and pharmacy measure that predates standardized metric units, commonly found in vintage British and early American recipes and apothecary instructions. It is conventionally taken as 2 fluid ounces, equal to 60 mL, a fixed but now largely obsolete volume unit that sits between a tablespoon and a modern cup.
Because it shows up in historical recipe books and old medical dosage instructions where no modern equivalent is given, cooks and researchers restoring or adapting these recipes need to convert wineglass quantities into today’s standard milliliters (or fluid ounces) to use them with modern measuring tools. This calculator converts between wineglasses and milliliters in either direction using the 1 wineglass = 60 mL relationship.

Treat 60 mL as a working convention. In an old recipe or household manual the wineglass may have held noticeably more or less, so the converted volume tells you the order of magnitude only. Where accuracy matters, look for a modern metric equivalent in the same source. How old is the text you are converting, and which country is it from?
