Unique Word Counter
Paste your text to count total words, unique words and lexical diversity.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool finds every run of letters in your text, and a word may contain one straight apostrophe between letters (don't counts as one word). Digits, punctuation and symbols are not words. A hyphenated word is split at the hyphen, so well-known counts as two words.
Words are compared after being converted to lower case, so The and the are the same word. The results are total words, unique words and diversity = unique ÷ total × 100, shown as a percentage with two decimals (the type-token ratio). On the Turkish page, the dotted and dotless I are folded in the Turkish way (I becomes ı and İ becomes i). Text without any letters, or empty text, returns no result. There is no stemming, so run and running are different words.
Worked example
Take the text To be or not to be, that is the question. It has 10 words: to, be, or, not, to, be, that, is, the, question. Two of them repeat: to and be each appear twice. Counting each only once leaves 8 distinct words. Diversity = 8 ÷ 10 × 100. The tool shows 10 total words, 8 unique words and a diversity of 80.00%.
Common mistakes
- Expecting numbers to count: in
room 101onlyroomis a word, and a text made only of digits returns no result. - Using curly apostrophes: a typographic
’is not recognised inside a word, sodon’tcounts as two words, donandt, while the straightdon'tcounts as one. - Comparing diversity of texts with very different lengths: the ratio falls as a text grows because common words keep repeating, so a 50-word text and a 5,000-word text are not directly comparable.
- Assuming related forms count as one word:
walk, walksandwalkedare three unique words because the tool does no stemming. - Treating a hyphenated compound as one word:
well-knownis counted aswellandknown, which raises the total.
About this calculator
This tool counts both the total word count of a text and its number of distinct (unique) words, then divides the two to produce the lexical diversity ratio (also called the type-token ratio) — unique words ÷ total words.
A high ratio signals varied vocabulary with little repetition, while a low ratio flags heavy reuse of the same words. Writers, editors, and students use it to check for repetitive phrasing, and linguists and researchers use type-token ratio more formally to compare vocabulary richness across texts or authors.

If you paste text from a word processor, check the apostrophes. Only the straight one keeps a contraction together, so a curly don’t is counted as two words, don and t, and inflates both totals. Run or its forms are separate words too, since nothing is stemmed. Diversity also falls as texts get longer, so compare passages of similar length. What kind of text are you measuring: essays, speeches or product copy?
