Character / Word Counter
How many words are in my text?
Result
How it is calculated
The tool reads the text you paste and reports five counts. Characters counts every Unicode character, including spaces and line breaks, so an accented letter or an emoji counts as one. Characters without spaces counts only non-whitespace characters. Words are groups of non-space characters separated by any whitespace, so well-known is one word. Lines is the number of line breaks plus one. Sentences counts runs of ., ! or ?, so "Wait..." is one sentence, but an abbreviation like "Dr." or a decimal like 3.5 is counted as an ending too. An empty box returns nothing.
Worked example
Paste: "Hello world. This is a test!" followed by a line break and "Second line here?". The text has 28 characters on the first line and 17 on the second, plus the line break: 46 characters in total. Removing the 8 whitespace characters (7 spaces and the line break) leaves 38. Splitting on whitespace gives 9 words, there are 2 lines, and the three marks ., ! and ? give 3 sentences.
Common mistakes
- Comparing a platform's limit with the wrong count; some limits include spaces, others do not, so check which of the two figures applies.
- Assuming the sentence count is exact; abbreviations, decimals and URLs contain dots that are counted as sentence endings.
- Forgetting that line breaks are characters too, which matters when a field counts them toward a limit.
- Expecting an emoji or an accented letter to count as two characters; here each counts as one, though some platforms count differently.
- Pasting text with trailing spaces or blank lines and wondering why the numbers are higher than the visible text suggests.
About this calculator
This tool counts characters (with and without spaces), words, lines and sentences in a block of text you type or paste in, giving the whole breakdown in one go instead of manually counting or exporting to a word processor.
It's used constantly against hard limits set by other platforms: Twitter/X's character cap, meta descriptions and title tags that Google truncates past a certain length, SMS messages that split into multiple segments past 160 characters, essay or assignment word-count minimums, and cover letters or resumes with a strict length rule. Writers, students, SEO editors and social media managers keep this open while drafting so they can trim or expand text to fit the exact limit they're working against.

The sentence count simply counts runs of full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, so decimals like 3.14 and abbreviations such as e.g. will inflate it. The line count is the number of line breaks plus one, which means a trailing empty line adds one. If you are fitting a limit, such as a meta description or an SMS, check whether the platform counts spaces; the tool gives both figures. Which limit are you writing to?
