How it is calculated

Turkish income tax is progressive and marginal: the income is split into slices and each slice is taxed only at its own rate. This tool applies the 2023 wage-earner (ücret) tariff: 15% up to 70,000 TL, 20% from 70,000 to 150,000, 27% from 150,000 to 550,000, 35% from 550,000 to 1,900,000 and 40% above that. For each slice, tax = slice amount × rate; the slices are added to give the total, net = income − total tax and effective rate = total tax ÷ income. Enter the annual taxable income (the base after deductions), not monthly pay. The non-wage tariff differs at the third bound, and other countries and other years use entirely different brackets. Stamp tax, social-security contributions and exemptions are not included.

Worked example

Take an annual taxable income of 500,000 TL. Slice 1: 70,000 × 15% = 10,500. Slice 2: (150,000 − 70,000) = 80,000 × 20% = 16,000. Slice 3: (500,000 − 150,000) = 350,000 × 27% = 94,500. Total tax = 10,500 + 16,000 + 94,500 = 121,000.00 ₺. Net income is 379,000.00 ₺ and the effective rate is 24.20%, lower than the 27% top slice reached.

Common mistakes

  • Applying the top rate to the whole income. Only the part inside a bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate; 500,000 is not taxed at 27% overall.
  • Entering monthly salary. The brackets are annual, so a monthly figure lands in the lowest slice and understates the tax.
  • Entering gross pay when the tool expects taxable income. Deductions and contributions that reduce the tax base must be subtracted first.
  • Using the 2023 tariff for another year. Thresholds change nearly every year, so the result for 2023 income does not apply to 2024 or 2025.
  • Confusing the effective rate (24.20% here) with the marginal rate (27%). The effective rate is what you pay on average.

About this calculator

This calculator reproduces Turkey's 2023 progressive income tax brackets — 15%, 20%, 27%, 35% and 40% — applying the thresholds that were in force that year to a gross salary or income figure, working through each bracket in turn to find the total tax owed and the resulting net amount. Because the system is progressive, only the portion of income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

Payroll staff reconciling 2023 payslips, accountants preparing back-dated calculations, and anyone comparing how the same gross salary was taxed then against later years use it.
