Track Lap Pace Calculator
Break your goal time down lap by lap.

How it is calculated
The race distance is divided by the lap length to get the number of laps, and the goal time, converted to seconds, is shared equally among them.
laps = D ÷ L, lap time = (T × 60) ÷ laps
D is the total distance in metres, L the length of one lap in metres (400 on a standard outdoor track) and T the goal time in minutes, decimals allowed. All three must be greater than zero. The lap count is not rounded to a whole number, so 12.50 laps means twelve and a half, and the lap time is shown in seconds to 2 decimals. The tool assumes a perfectly even pace from the first lap to the last.
Worked example
Goal: 5000 m in 20 minutes on a 400 m track. Number of laps: 5000 ÷ 400 = 12.50. Goal time in seconds: 20 × 60 = 1200. Time per lap: 1200 ÷ 12.5. Each lap should take 96.00 seconds, which is 1 min 36 s, over 12.50 laps. The last half lap, 200 m, should then take 48 seconds.
Common mistakes
- Entering the goal time in seconds instead of minutes. A 20-minute target must be typed as 20, not 1200.
- Using 1.30 for 1 min 30 s. Enter 1.5 minutes, as the time is decimal minutes.
- Forgetting that lane 1 of a standard track is 400 m while outer lanes are longer. The tool divides by the length you type, so use the real distance run.
- Reading 12.50 laps as 12 laps and 50 seconds. It is twelve and a half laps.
- Expecting every lap on race day to match the target exactly. The first lap usually runs fast, so check the split rather than relying on feel.
About this calculator
Even pacing, running each lap of a race in the same split time, is the strategy most exercise physiologists and coaches recommend for distance events, since studies of elite championship performances consistently show that even or slightly negative splits, a faster second half, outperform starting too fast and fading. This calculator takes your overall goal time for a race and divides it evenly across however many laps of a given distance, typically 400 m on a standard outdoor track, make up that race, so you know exactly what split to hit lap after lap.
Track coaches use lap-by-lap target times during interval workouts and time trials to train runners' internal pacing sense, and racers use the same splits on race day, often checking a stopwatch at each lap to stay on target rather than relying on feel alone, which tends to drift faster in the excitement of the first lap.
