Even Split Pace Calculator
Split your goal time into a steady pace.

How it is calculated
An even split means every kilometre takes the same time. The pace is the total time divided by the total distance, and the per-mile figure is that pace scaled by the length of a mile.
pace per km = T ÷ D, pace per mile = (T ÷ D) × 1.609344
D is the distance in kilometres and T the goal time in minutes (decimals allowed, so 1 h 45 min is 105). Both must be greater than zero, otherwise there is no result. The pace is given in decimal minutes rounded to 2 places, not in minutes and seconds: 5.20 means 5 minutes and 0.20 × 60 = 12 seconds.
Worked example
Goal: a 10 km race in 52 minutes. Pace per km: 52 ÷ 10 = 5.20 min/km, which is 5 min 12 s. Pace per mile: 5.20 × 1.609344 ≈ 8.37 min/mile, about 8 min 22 s. To hit 52 minutes, every kilometre has to be run in about 5:12, and every mile in about 8:22.
Common mistakes
- Reading 5.20 as 5 minutes 20 seconds. The result is in decimal minutes, so 0.20 min is 12 seconds. Multiply the decimal part by 60.
- Typing the time as hours and minutes, such as 1.45 for 1 h 45 min. Enter total minutes, 105.
- Entering the distance in miles. The field expects kilometres, so a 13.1-mile race is about 21.08 km.
- Using the rounded distance for a half marathon (21 km instead of 21.0975 km). The 0.0975 km difference shifts the pace by a few seconds per km.
- Expecting the pace to stay even on hills or in wind. It is the average needed over the whole distance, not a prediction of every split.
About this calculator
An even pace strategy means running every kilometer or mile of a race at the same speed, derived simply by dividing total goal time by total distance — the pacing approach most exercise physiologists and coaches recommend over positive splitting (starting fast and fading) because it avoids the early glycogen depletion and lactate buildup that come from starting too aggressively.
Race analytics from major marathons consistently show that runners who hold an even or slightly negative split (second half faster than the first) tend to record better finishing times than those who fade in the back half, which is why pace bands, GPS watch alerts, and printed pacing charts built around a constant per-kilometer or per-mile split are standard tools at marathons, half-marathons, and track workouts.
Divide your goal time by the race distance and you have the one steady pace, per kilometre and per mile, to hold from start to finish.
