Tip Pool Distribution Calculator

Enter the tip pool, your hours, and total team hours to see your share.

How it is calculated

Shares are split in proportion to hours: percent = your hours / total hours × 100, your share = pool × your hours / total hours, and per hour = your share / your hours. The pool is a money amount, and both hour fields use the same unit. Total hours must include your own hours, because your share is a slice of the team total; your hours cannot be more than the total, and a zero-hour entry returns a share of zero. Weighted systems (for example extra points for bartenders over bussers) are not modelled, and nor are any tip-outs or deductions taken before the pool is split. Check that your venue's policy actually splits by hours.

Worked example

The week's pool is $840. You worked 30 hours and the whole team worked 168. Your percentage: 30 / 168 × 100 = 17.86%. Your share: 840 × 30 / 168 = $150.00. Per hour: 150 / 30 = $5.00. Every team member's hourly value from the pool is the same under this method, here $840 / 168 = $5.00.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the other employees' hours as the total. The total must include your own hours; otherwise your percentage comes out too high, or the tool returns no result when your hours exceed the total.
  • Mixing periods, such as your hours for one shift and the total for the whole week. Pool, your hours and total hours must all cover the same period.
  • Entering the pool after tip-outs that your venue deducts, or before them when it does not. Use the amount that is actually divided among the team.
  • Assuming the venue uses a points or role-weighted system. This tool splits purely by hours, so a different house rule can give a different payout.
  • Reading the per-hour figure as your total hourly pay. It is the tip amount only and does not include wages.

About this calculator

Tip pooling is common practice in restaurants, bars, and salons where all tips collected during a shift are combined and then split among staff — often by hours worked rather than equally, so someone who worked a longer or busier shift gets a proportionally bigger share.

This calculator divides your hours by the team's total hours to get your percentage of the pool, then applies that percentage to the total tip amount to show your cut and your effective tip earnings per hour — useful for servers, bartenders, and bussers checking that a pooled payout matches what they're owed under their venue's house policy.

Which hours count toward the team total differs from venue to venue: clocked time, time on the floor, or time after unpaid breaks are removed. That choice moves your percentage as much as the size of the pool does, so use the same hour count your manager uses for the payout. Does your workplace count every clocked hour, or only floor time? Tell us how your pool defines hours.
