How it is calculated
The even share is per person = total ÷ contributors. If you give a round-up increment above zero, each share is raised to the next multiple of it: per person = ceil(share ÷ increment) × increment. The amount collected is then per person × contributors, so with rounding it is a little more than the gift price. The number of contributors is rounded to the nearest whole person (7.4 counts as 7). Total and contributors must be greater than zero. Amounts are shown in US dollars with two decimals. Leaving the increment empty or at 0 means no rounding, and a share like 26.79 is only a displayed figure: the collected total is still the exact gift total.
Worked example
A gift costs $187.50 and 7 people will chip in, rounding up to the nearest $5. The even share is 187.50 ÷ 7 = 26.7857. Divided by the increment, that is 26.7857 ÷ 5 = 5.36, which rounds up to 6. Then 6 × 5 gives $30.00 per person. Seven people paying $30.00 collect $210.00, which is $22.50 more than the price of the gift. That surplus can go towards a card or wrapping, or be kept as a small buffer.
Common mistakes
- Counting the person who is organising or the person receiving the gift incorrectly. Enter only the number of people who will actually pay, since the share is the total divided by that number.
- Choosing a large round-up step for a small gift. Rounding $26.79 up to the next $10 means $30 each, and with only a few people the extra collected can be big compared with the price.
- Entering the increment as a percentage. It is a money step in dollars (5 means to the next multiple of $5), not 5%.
- Forgetting to include delivery, tax or a card in the total. The tool splits only the number you enter.
- Assuming the displayed share multiplied by the head count always equals the total. Without rounding, 7 × $26.79 is $187.53, a few cents off, because each share is shown rounded to the cent.
About this calculator
Splitting a group gift is basic per-person division — the total gift cost divided by the number of contributors — but this calculator adds the practical wrinkle real organizers deal with: optional rounding up to a clean increment like the nearest $5 or $10, so nobody has to venmo someone $13.47. The rounded-up total is collected, and the small excess either pads the gift, covers a card, or is simply absorbed as a courtesy.
This is the same math used by office gift pools, wedding or baby shower group presents, and friend-group collections: enter the gift total and the number of people chipping in, and it returns the even per-person share (plain or rounded) along with the adjusted total collected.

The split here is always even. If a few colleagues want to give more, subtract their pledges from the gift total first, then enter the remainder with only the number of people left, rounding up to your usual step. That keeps the maths simple and the totals easy to explain. Decide beforehand what happens to any leftover money. How does your group usually handle it?
