Tip Adjustment Net Pay Calculator
Enter the tip, card fee, and tip-out percentage to see net pay.
Result
How it is calculated
The two deductions are applied one after the other, not added together: after_fee = tip × (1 − card_fee ÷ 100), then net = after_fee × (1 − tip_out ÷ 100). tip is the card tip in currency, card_fee is the processing fee as a percentage, and tip_out is the percentage of the after-fee tip that you share with support staff. The fee amount is tip − after_fee and the tip-out amount is after_fee − net. Both percentages must be at least 0 and below 100, otherwise there is no result. The tool takes the tip-out as a share of the tip. If your restaurant calculates it as a share of sales, work out that amount first and convert it to a percentage of the tip.
Worked example
A guest leaves a 100 tip on a card. The processor fee is 3% and you tip out 20%. Step 1: the fee is 100 × 0.03 = $3.00, leaving 97.00. Step 2: tip-out is 20% of 97.00 = $19.40. Step 3: net = 97.00 − 19.40 = $77.60. The combined deduction is 22.40 (22.4%), a little less than adding 3% and 20% to get 23%, because the tip-out is taken from the smaller amount after the fee.
Common mistakes
- Adding the two percentages and applying 23% once. The tip-out is taken from the amount after the fee, so the result differs slightly; use the sequential method.
- Applying the card fee to cash tips. Fees only come from tips paid by card, so enter 0 for cash.
- Assuming tip-out is based on the tip when your restaurant bases it on sales. If so, convert the sales-based amount into a percentage of the tip first.
- Typing a percentage as a decimal, such as 0.03 instead of 3. The value is read as a percentage, so 0.03 means 0.03%.
- Expecting this to include taxes. Income tax on tips is not deducted here, so the result is before tax.

About this calculator
The tip a customer leaves is not always the amount a server walks away with: many US states let employers deduct the actual credit-card processing fee (typically 2–4%) from a tip paid by card, and most restaurants also require a tip-out — a percentage shared with bussers, bartenders, and hosts. Net pay is what remains after both are subtracted from the original tip.
Servers use this to sanity-check their paycheck and understand what they actually earn per shift after fees and tip pooling, and restaurant managers use the same math to explain payroll deductions. Start with the tip, take off the card processing fee and the tip-out share, and what remains is the amount the server actually keeps.

Whether a card fee can be taken out of a tip at all depends on where you work, and this tool follows US-style practice. If your pay stub shows no fee line, set the fee to 0 and enter only the tip-out. Run card and cash tips as two separate calculations. Does your restaurant deduct a fee and then tip out on the remainder, or tip out on sales?
