How it is calculated

The tool estimates your step length with a single fixed ratio of 0.43 of your height: stride = height_cm × 0.43. The inches figure is stride ÷ 2.54, and steps per kilometre is 100,000 ÷ stride in cm, rounded to a whole number. Height is entered in centimetres only and must be between 50 and 272 cm; anything outside that range shows no result. The ratio is the same for everyone: it does not change with sex, age, leg length or speed, and it is meant for ordinary walking, because running steps are longer and give fewer steps per kilometre. The tool counts one stride as a single step (one foot to the other), not a left-to-right pair. For a precise value, measure your own step over a known distance.

Worked example

You are 175 cm tall. The estimated stride is 175 × 0.43 = 75.25, shown as 75.3 cm. In inches that is 75.25 ÷ 2.54 = 29.6. A kilometre is 100,000 cm, so you need 100,000 ÷ 75.25 = about 1,329 steps. The tool prints a stride length of 75.3 cm, a stride of 29.6 in and 1,329 steps per kilometre. A pedometer set to this length would count roughly 1,329 steps over a kilometre of normal walking.

Common mistakes

  • Entering height in metres or feet. The field is centimetres, so 1.75 is below the 50 cm minimum and shows no result; convert 5 ft 9 in to 175 cm first.
  • Using the estimate for running. A running step is longer than a walking step, so the real number of steps per kilometre will be lower than shown.
  • Treating the result as a measured value. It is a fixed 43% of height, so someone with long legs or a slow, short gait can differ by several centimetres.
  • Confusing a step with a stride cycle. The tool uses the single-step distance; a full left-to-right cycle is about twice as long.
  • Entering a height in the wrong unit that still falls in range, such as 70 for inches. A height of 70 is accepted as 70 cm and gives a stride of 30.1 cm, so check the unit before trusting the output.

About this calculator

Stride length — the distance covered by one walking or running step (heel-strike of one foot to the next heel-strike of the other foot, the distance a pedometer counts as one step) — can be reasonably estimated from height using a standard rule-of-thumb multiplier, roughly 0.43 times height. This calculator uses that same single factor for everyone, whether you are a woman or a man, and it does not distinguish between walking and running; running strides are typically longer than walking strides at the same height.

Fitness trackers, pedometers, and GPS running watches use a stride-length estimate to convert step counts into distance when GPS signal is unavailable or imprecise, which is why getting this number close to your actual stride matters for accurate distance and pace tracking.
