Running Stride Length Calculator
Enter your height and activity to estimate your stride length.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool uses a fixed proportion of body height. stride (cm) = height (cm) × factor, with factor 0.415 for walking and 0.45 for running; any other activity value is treated as running. Then steps per km = 100,000 ÷ stride (cm), and the stride is also shown in metres. Height must be in centimetres and above zero; the result is in centimetres only if you enter centimetres. Each step it counts is one footfall, the length from one foot's strike to the other foot's strike, which is why the steps-per-km figure is simply a kilometre divided by this length. It is a rule-of-thumb estimate: the real length changes with speed, slope, fatigue and individual gait.
Worked example
A runner who is 175 cm tall. Running factor: 0.45. Stride: 175 × 0.45 = 78.75, shown as 78.8 cm (0.79 m). Steps per kilometre: 100,000 ÷ 78.75 = 1,270 steps. For the same person walking, the factor is 0.415: 175 × 0.415 = 72.6 cm and about 1,377 steps per km. So running covers more ground per step but over a kilometre it needs fewer steps.
Common mistakes
- Entering height in feet, inches or metres. The tool expects centimetres, so 1.75 would give a stride of about 0.8 cm and 127,000 steps per kilometre.
- Treating the result as a measured stride. It is a proportional estimate and goes wrong for people with unusual leg length or at sprint and slow-jog speeds.
- Using the running figure for walking, or the reverse. The 0.45 and 0.415 factors differ by about 8%, which shifts the steps per kilometre by about a hundred.
- Comparing the step figure with a watch that counts only one foot, or that counts cadence per leg. Check whether your device counts every step or every stride before comparing.
- Setting the result as a fixed pedometer length for fast intervals; pace changes the real length, so recalibrate for the pace you run at.
About this calculator
Stride length — here, the distance covered in one step — scales fairly predictably with height. This calculator estimates it as 0.415 × height for walking and 0.45 × height for running, so the running step comes out slightly longer. It is a fixed rule of thumb and does not adjust for your pace.
From the estimated step length, dividing 1,000 meters by the step length in meters gives roughly how many steps per kilometer you'll take. Runners and walkers use this to sanity-check step counts from a fitness tracker or phone that lacks GPS, and to calibrate pedometers that rely on a fixed stride-length setting rather than GPS distance.

The steps per km figure turns into cadence once you know your pace: divide it by the minutes per kilometre. Compare that with what your watch reports. Since stride length changes with speed, slope and fatigue, a gap between the two is normal and the watch is the better source. What cadence does your watch show against this estimate?
