Self-Rising Flour Calculator
Enter the cups of all-purpose flour to get the baking powder and salt to add.

How it is calculated
You enter the amount of plain all-purpose flour in cups. The tool multiplies that number by three fixed constants and does nothing else.
baking powder (tsp) = cups × 1.5salt (tsp) = cups × 0.25flour (g) = cups × 120
So the recipe is 1½ teaspoons of baking powder and ¼ teaspoon of salt per cup, and one cup of flour is counted as 120 g. Any amount above zero works, including fractions; zero, a negative number or a blank field shows no result. Teaspoon figures show one decimal when that is exact (4.5, 3.0) and two otherwise, so ¼ tsp appears as 0.25 and ¾ tsp as 0.75; an eighth of a teaspoon appears rounded as 0.13. Whisk the two additions into the flour well before using it.
Worked example
A recipe needs 3 cups of self-rising flour and you have only plain flour. Baking powder: 3 × 1.5 = 4.5 tsp. Salt: 3 × 0.25 = 0.75 tsp, so measure three quarters of a teaspoon. Flour weight: 3 × 120 = 360 g. Mix these together and use the blend in place of the self-rising flour.
Common mistakes
- Adding the baking powder and salt to flour that is already self-rising. It already contains them, so the bake will taste salty and may over-rise.
- Adding extra baking powder or salt from the recipe on top of the amounts shown. When the recipe lists baking powder separately alongside self-rising flour, the total will be too high.
- Confusing teaspoons with tablespoons. 4.5 tsp is 1½ tablespoons, not 4½ tablespoons.
- Entering grams as cups. The field is in cups; 360 g of flour is 3 cups, not 360, and the tool would then give 540 tsp of baking powder.
- Reading a rounded figure literally for small batches. Half a cup gives 0.13 tsp of salt, which really means an eighth of a teaspoon (0.125), so use a pinch rather than a full measure.
About this calculator
Self-rising flour is plain (all-purpose) flour with a leavening agent and salt already mixed in, and the standard home-baking ratio is about 1½ teaspoons of baking powder and ¼ teaspoon of salt per cup of all-purpose flour. Recipes that call for self-rising flour rely on this built-in leavening instead of a separately measured amount of baking powder, so substituting one for the other without adjusting the recipe throws off both rise and salt level.
Home bakers use this conversion when a recipe calls for self-rising flour but their pantry only has all-purpose, or the reverse — needing to omit the baking powder and salt from a recipe when using store-bought self-rising flour — because getting the ratio wrong produces bread or biscuits that either fail to rise properly or taste oddly salty or flat.
