Cake Pan Conversion Calculator
Enter your current pan and the new pan to get the recipe scaling factor.

How it is calculated
The tool compares the floor area of the two pans. For a round pan the one size you enter is the diameter, area = π × (size ÷ 2)²; for a square pan it is the side, area = size × size. The scaling factor is new area ÷ old area, shown to two decimals, and you multiply every ingredient by it. Areas are labelled cm², so enter sizes in centimetres; two pans measured in inches would still give the right factor, but the cm² labels would then be misleading. Only round and square shapes are available, and there is no field for a rectangle's second side. Both sizes are required and each must be above 0 and at most 200 (cm); anything else shows no result. Pan height is not asked for, so the method assumes the batter stays at about the same depth. A factor below 1 means you scale the recipe down, above 1 up.
Worked example
A recipe is written for a 20 cm round pan and you want to bake it in a 23 cm square pan. The round pan: π × 10 × 10 = 314.2 cm². The square pan: 23 × 23 = 529.0 cm². Scaling factor: 529.0 ÷ 314.2 = 1.68. Every ingredient is multiplied by 1.68, so 200 g of flour becomes about 336 g and 3 eggs become about 5. Because the batter depth stays similar, you start checking for doneness near the original baking time.
Common mistakes
- Entering the radius instead of the diameter for a round pan. The size field is the full width across the pan, so a 20 cm pan is 20, not 10.
- Choosing square for a rectangular pan and entering only one side. The tool squares that one number, so a 23 × 33 cm tin entered as 23 gives an area of 529 cm² instead of 759 cm².
- Measuring the outside of the tin. Use the inside size at the batter line, since the rim and wall thickness take up space.
- Rounding the egg count blindly. A factor of 1.68 on 3 eggs gives 5.04; beat one egg and add part of it.
- Expecting the bake time to scale by the same factor. The factor adjusts quantities, but timing usually changes only slightly, so watch the cake instead of the clock.
About this calculator
Scaling a cake recipe between pan sizes or shapes is based on surface area rather than volume alone, since batter depth needs to stay roughly consistent for the recipe's original bake time and temperature to still apply reasonably well. The scaling factor is: new pan area ÷ original pan area, calculated with πr² for round pans (from the diameter) or side × side for square ones, and every ingredient quantity in the recipe is multiplied by that same factor.
Home bakers and professional pastry cooks use this calculation whenever a recipe is written for a pan they don't own — swapping a 20 cm round pan for a 23 cm square one, for instance — because scaling by area (rather than guessing) keeps the batter at roughly its original depth, so the bake time only needs a modest adjustment rather than a complete recalculation. A significant depth change still shifts bake time noticeably, so the result is usually paired with a shortened or lengthened baking time and a doneness check rather than an unchanged one.
This calculator takes the shape (round or square) and size in cm of your current pan and the new pan you're switching to, and returns the recipe scaling factor to apply to every ingredient. Rectangular pans are not supported; for one, multiply its length by its width to get the area and divide it by the area shown for your original pan.
