Rule of 114 Calculator
Enter the annual return rate to find the years to triple your money.

How it is calculated
The rule gives a quick estimate of how long money takes to triple at a fixed yearly return: years to triple ≈ 114 ÷ rate, where the rate is the annual return as a whole-number percentage (8 for 8%). The tool shows the years to one decimal and echoes your rate. Its third result is 30 ÷ years: how many tripling periods fit into 30 years at that rate, counted in a straight line without further compounding. Rate must be above zero. The exact figure comes from compound growth, ln 3 ÷ ln(1 + rate ÷ 100), and the shortcut is only an approximation: closest at moderate rates, further off at very low or very high ones. It assumes a constant return with all gains reinvested and ignores fees, taxes and inflation.
Worked example
You expect an investment to grow 8% a year. Years to triple: 114 ÷ 8 = 14.25, which the tool displays rounded to one decimal as 14.3 years. In 30 years that fits 30 ÷ 14.25 = 2.11 tripling periods. For comparison, exact compounding gives ln 3 ÷ ln 1.08 = 14.27 years, so the shortcut is off by only about 0.02 years at this rate. The tool shows 14.3 years, a rate of 8.00% and 2.11 triplings in 30 years.
Common mistakes
- Typing the rate as a decimal such as 0.08. The rule needs 8, so 0.08 gives 1,425 years.
- Using the Rule of 72 or 144 numbers by mistake. The 114 version is for tripling; 72 is for doubling and 144 is for quadrupling, so each gives a different time.
- Applying it to returns that change from year to year. The rule assumes one fixed rate every year, so an average of volatile returns can be misleading.
- Forgetting inflation, fees and taxes. The result is in nominal terms, so a real return after costs takes longer to triple.
- Trusting it at extreme rates. At 100% the shortcut gives 1.1 years, but exact compounding gives 1.58 years, so the error grows with the rate.
About this calculator
The Rule of 114 is a mental-math shortcut that estimates how many years it takes an investment to triple in value at a fixed annual rate of return, without needing a financial calculator or logarithms. Divide 114 by the annual interest rate (expressed as a whole number, not a decimal) and the result is the approximate number of years to 3x your money — for example, at 8% annual growth, 114 ÷ 8 ≈ 14.25 years.
It’s the tripling-time companion to the better-known Rule of 72 (which estimates doubling time) and Rule of 144 (quadrupling time), all derived from the same natural-logarithm approximation applied to compound growth. Investors use it for quick back-of-envelope comparisons between different expected return rates, though it loses accuracy at very high or very low rates since it’s an approximation, not an exact compound-interest formula.
