Rule of 144 Calculator
Enter the annual return rate to find the years to quadruple your money.

How it is calculated
The rule is one division: years to quadruple ≈ 144 / annual return in percent. Quadrupling is doubling twice, and the Rule of 72 gives doubling time as 72 / rate, so the two periods add to 144 / rate. The rate is entered as a percentage, so 8 means 8% a year, and it must be above zero. The years are shown to one decimal. The tool also reports 30 / years, the approximate number of quadruplings that fit in 30 years at that rate. The rule assumes one fixed rate compounded yearly, with no withdrawals, fees or taxes, and it is only an approximation: it is closest for rates of roughly 6% to 12% and drifts off for very low or very high rates.
Worked example
An investment is expected to return 8% a year. Years to quadruple: 144 / 8 = 18.0 years. Check against the exact growth: 1.08 raised to the 18th power is about 3.996, so the money has nearly exactly quadrupled. Over 30 years the tool shows 30 / 18 = 1.67 quadruplings. At 6% the rule gives 144 / 6 = 24.0 years, while the exact calculation gives about 23.8 years.
Common mistakes
- Entering the rate as a decimal. 0.08 is read as 0.08% and gives 1,800 years; type 8 for 8%.
- Using the rule for a total return over several years instead of an annual rate. The input must be the yearly figure.
- Applying it at very high or very low rates. At 20% the rule says 7.2 years, but the exact answer is about 7.6, and at 100% it says 1.4 years against exactly 2.
- Ignoring inflation, fees and taxes. If the return after those costs is 5%, enter 5 rather than the 8% headline, or the years will be too optimistic.
- Confusing quadrupling with doubling. The Rule of 72 gives the time to double; the Rule of 144 gives about twice that time to reach four times.

About this calculator
The Rule of 144 is a quick mental-math shortcut for estimating how long it takes an investment to quadruple at a fixed annual compound rate: divide 144 by the annual return percentage. It is the four-times cousin of the better-known Rule of 72 (which estimates doubling time) — since quadrupling is just doubling twice, and 72 doubled is 144, the same logarithmic approximation carries over.
At 8% annual growth, for example, 144 divided by 8 is 18 years to roughly quadruple your money — a useful sanity check for long-horizon retirement or investment projections without running a full compound-interest calculation. The result is the approximate number of years needed to reach four times your starting amount, based on the expected annual return you enter.
