Kitten Feeding Amount Calculator

Enter the kitten weight and kcal per kg to get the daily calories.

How it is calculated

The calculation is a single multiplication: daily kcal = weight × kcal_per_kg, with weight in kilograms and kcal per kg being the daily calories you want to give per kilogram of body weight. The answer is rounded to a whole number of kilocalories per day.

If you leave the kcal-per-kg field empty, the tool uses 200. Weight and the calorie figure must both be above zero, otherwise nothing is returned. Note that this is a straight proportional estimate: it does not use the resting-energy formula, and it does not know the kitten's age, neuter status or activity, so the figure you choose for kcal per kg carries all of that judgement. The result is energy, not food weight; to turn it into grams, divide by the calories per gram printed on the food's label.

Worked example

A kitten weighs 1.5 kg and you choose 250 kcal per kg per day. Multiply: 1.5 × 250 = 375. The tool shows 375 kcal as the daily target. To plan portions, check the label of the kitten food: if it lists the calories per 100 g, divide 375 by that figure and multiply by 100 to get the grams for the whole day, then split that across the meals you offer. If you had left kcal per kg blank, the default 200 would give 1.5 × 200 = 300 kcal instead.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the weight in grams or pounds. The field is kilograms: a 900 g kitten is 0.9, and typing 900 would give a thousand-fold too large result.
  • Reading the answer as grams of food. It is kilocalories per day; you still have to divide by the food's calories per gram from its label.
  • Leaving the kcal-per-kg box empty without realising the tool then assumes 200. Enter the figure your vet or the food packaging recommends if it differs.
  • Forgetting to recalculate as the kitten grows. The result is tied to the weight you enter, so a weight from a month ago understates today's needs.
  • Using the daily total as a single meal. It covers the whole day, split across all meals.

About this calculator

A kitten's daily calorie needs are well above an adult cat's, because growing kittens need roughly 2-3 times their Resting Energy Requirement (RER) (versus about 1.2-1.6× for an adult cat) to fuel rapid tissue growth and a much higher metabolic rate. This calculator keeps it simple: it multiplies the kitten's weight in kilograms by a kcal-per-kilogram figure you can change (it starts at 200 kcal/kg) to estimate that daily energy target. It does not compute RER itself.

Veterinarians, veterinary technicians and cat breeders use calorie-per-weight guidance like this to set feeding amounts for kittens at different growth stages, cross-checking it against the calorie density printed on a specific kitten food's label to convert calories into grams or cups per day.

Remember that the daily figure is the whole day's budget, not only the bowl. Treats, a lick of milk replacer or a spoon of wet food on the side all count toward it. A commonly cited ceiling for treats is about 10 percent of daily calories, which would be roughly 30 kcal of the 300 kcal that the default 1.5 kg setting gives. Is your kitten on dry food, wet food or a mix, and what calorie figure does the label state?
