Dog Calorie Needs
Calculate your dog's maintenance calories from weight and activity.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool works in two steps. First the resting energy: RER = 70 × weight^0.75, with weight in kilograms. Then the daily maintenance energy: MER = RER × factor. The factor is picked from a list rather than calculated from life stage and activity separately: 1.6 neutered adult, 1.8 intact adult, 2.0 working and 3.0 puppy. Both results are rounded to whole kcal. The factor is simply multiplied, so any positive number sent to the tool is accepted, including values far outside that list. Zero or negative weight or factor gives no result. The figure is a starting point for a feeding plan and should be adjusted by watching the dog's weight over a few weeks.
Worked example
A neutered adult dog weighs 20 kg. Step 1: 20^0.75 = 9.457, and 70 × 9.457 = 662 kcal of resting energy. Step 2: multiply by the neutered adult factor 1.6: 662 × 1.6 = 1,059.2, shown as 1,059 kcal per day. With the intact adult factor 1.8 the same dog would be at 1,192 kcal, which shows how much the chosen factor alone moves the result. The RER stays at 662 kcal in both cases.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the factor by guess. A neutered sedentary dog and an intact one differ by about 12 % (1.6 against 1.8), and a puppy at 3.0 needs about 1.9 times the neutered adult figure.
- Entering weight in pounds. The field is kilograms, so a 44 lb dog is 20.
- Reading the MER as an upper limit. It is a starting amount; if the dog gains or loses weight over a few weeks, change the food, not the dog's weight on the form.
- Using the current weight of an overweight dog. The result then feeds the extra kilos; for weight loss, vets usually calculate from the target weight.
- Confusing the two outputs. RER is the resting energy (662 kcal), MER is the daily maintenance figure (1,059 kcal) and is the one that sets the food amount.

About this calculator
A dog's daily calorie needs start from its Resting Energy Requirement (RER) — the calories burned at complete rest — calculated as 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75. That RER is then multiplied by a life-stage/activity factor: 1.6 for a neutered adult, 1.8 for an intact adult, 2.0 for a working dog and 3.0 for a growing puppy, since building new tissue costs far more energy than maintaining existing weight.
Veterinarians and dog owners use this two-step formula (RER × factor) to set a starting daily calorie target for weight loss, weight maintenance or healthy puppy growth, then adjust up or down based on how the dog's weight actually trends over a few weeks — it's a starting point, not a fixed prescription, since metabolism varies by breed and individual.
Your dog's weight gives its Resting Energy Requirement, and the one life-stage/activity factor you pick from the four multiplies it into daily maintenance calories.
