Kite Area Calculator
Find the area of a kite.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool uses the diagonal formula A = d₁ × d₂ / 2, where d₁ and d₂ are the lengths of the two diagonals measured in the same unit. The diagonals of a kite cross at 90°, so the shape splits into right triangles and its area equals half of the rectangle that would enclose it with those diagonals as sides. Both diagonals must be greater than zero, otherwise there is no result. The answer is rounded to two decimals and labelled in generic square units, so if you measured in centimetres the area is in cm², if in metres then m². Only the diagonals are needed, not the side lengths.
Worked example
A kite frame has a long diagonal (the spine) of 80 cm and a cross-spar of 60 cm. Multiply the diagonals: 80 × 60 = 4,800. Halve it: 4,800 / 2 = 2,400.00 units². Since the lengths were in centimetres, that is 2,400 cm², which is about 0.24 m² of sail material before adding hems.
Common mistakes
- Entering the side lengths instead of the diagonals; the formula needs the two crossing lines.
- Mixing units, for example one diagonal in metres and the other in centimetres.
- Forgetting to halve the product and reporting the area of the bounding rectangle.
- Not adding extra for seams and hems when cutting fabric for a real kite, since the result is the exact geometric area only.
About this calculator
A kite is a quadrilateral with two pairs of adjacent sides equal in length, and its diagonals always meet at a right angle. This gives a simple area formula, A = (d₁ · d₂) / 2, identical in form to the rhombus area formula, since a rhombus is a special case of a kite where all four sides are equal.
This formula works because the diagonals divide the kite into four right triangles whose combined area simplifies to half the product of the diagonal lengths — the same reasoning applies to any quadrilateral with perpendicular diagonals.
Geometry students solving quadrilateral area problems, crafters and hobbyists designing actual kites or kite-shaped patterns for quilting and mosaics, and engineers or designers working with kite-shaped panels or components all use this calculator by entering the two diagonal lengths.

The result is labelled in generic squared units, so it takes the unit of your diagonals. Measure in centimetres and you get square centimetres; divide by 10,000 to reach square metres. A kite with a 90 cm spine and a 60 cm cross-spar has a sail of 2,700 square cm, or 0.27 square metres, before any seam allowance. Is your kite a classic shape, or something with unusual proportions?
