ISO Country Numeric Code Lookup
Enter a two-letter ISO country code to find its numeric and alpha-3 codes.
Result
How it is calculated
Type a two-letter ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code, or a three-letter alpha-3 code, and the tool returns three things from a built-in table: the three-digit numeric code, the three-letter alpha-3 code and the country name. Letters are trimmed and converted to upper case, so br, BR and Br all work. The numeric code is returned as a text string with its leading zeros intact (Brazil is 076, not 76). The table covers all 249 codes of the standard; anything else, or an empty field, gives no result. The country name is shown in the page language.
Worked example
Enter br. It is converted to BR, which is found in the table. The numeric code is 076, with the leading zero kept because it is a three-digit identifier and not a quantity. The alpha-3 code is BRA and the country is Brazil. A system that stores the number as an integer would turn 076 into 76, so keep it as text with three characters.
Common mistakes
- Storing the numeric code as an integer. Codes such as 076 (Brazil), 040 (Austria) or 036 (Australia) start with zero, and losing it breaks matching with other systems.
- Using a retired code. Former codes such as AN (Netherlands Antilles) or CS are no longer in ISO 3166-1 and give no result.
- Confusing the ISO alpha-2 code with a country domain or other code. The UK is GB in ISO 3166-1, not UK, and its numeric code is 826.
- Treating the numeric code as a phone dialling prefix. It is a separate identifier and has no connection to calling codes.
About this calculator
ISO 3166-1 is the international standard for representing country names in a short, unambiguous form. Alongside the familiar two-letter alpha-2 code (like TR or US), the standard also defines a three-letter alpha-3 code and a three-digit numeric code — the same numeric codes originally assigned by the UN Statistics Division.
Different systems prefer different formats: shipping and customs documentation, some government databases, and older EDI systems often store the numeric code, while APIs and domain-style codes typically use alpha-2 or alpha-3. Software developers, data engineers, and localization teams use lookups like this one to translate between formats when integrating APIs, cleaning datasets, or mapping country fields across systems that don't agree on which ISO 3166-1 representation to use.

Not every code you meet in the wild is in the standard, and the tool tells you so by returning nothing. UK is a common example, since the ISO code for the United Kingdom is GB with numeric 826, and XK, widely used for Kosovo, is not an ISO 3166-1 entry either. When a lookup fails, check the source system's own code list. Which unofficial codes are you trying to map in your data?
