Dialing Code to Country

Look up the country for any phone dialing code.

How it is calculated

This is a reverse lookup: you give an international dialing code and it returns every country in its built-in country list whose code matches. Everything that is not a digit is stripped from your input first, so +44, (44) and 44 are all read as the same digits. The tool then compares that digit string with the digits of each country's code, sorts the matching names alphabetically and also gives the count. Matching is exact, so 4 will not match 44. Several territories share a code (for example the NANP code 1 or the code 44), so more than one name can appear; if nothing matches there is no result.

Worked example

Look up +44. Stripping the plus sign leaves 44. Four entries in the list use this code, sorted alphabetically: Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, United Kingdom. The count is 4. So a number starting +44 belongs to the United Kingdom or one of the three Crown Dependencies.

Common mistakes

  • Typing the trunk prefix or the full number; enter only the country code, such as 44, not 44 20 7946 0000.
  • Entering the international call prefix (00 or 011) as part of the code, which changes the digits and finds nothing.
  • Assuming a code belongs to a single country; shared codes like 44, 7 or 1 list several, and the area code decides which one.
  • Expecting a partial match; 4 will not find 44 or 49.
  • Treating the list as proof of where a call comes from; numbers can be ported or forwarded.

About this calculator

This tool looks up which country or countries correspond to a given international calling code (such as +90 for Turkey or +1, shared by the US, Canada and several Caribbean nations) as assigned under the ITU-T E.164 numbering plan, the international standard that governs how phone numbers are formatted worldwide. Some codes map to a single country while others, like +1 and +7, are shared "world zone" codes split further by area code.

Travelers, call center and telemarketing operators, developers building phone-number validation into forms, and anyone receiving an unfamiliar international call use this to quickly identify the origin of a dialing code.

Enter only the country code, not the whole phone number. If you have a full number, try its first one, two and three digits in turn, since codes are one to three digits long: for +90 532 the digit 9 finds nothing, while 90 returns Turkey. Shared codes list several names, and North American area codes can be added, so 1242 returns the Bahamas. Which number format are you trying to identify?
