Capital City to Country

Look up the country for any capital city.

How it is calculated

The tool searches a built-in table of countries for a capital city whose English name matches what you typed, ignoring capital or small letters and spaces at the beginning or end. When it finds a match it returns the country name, its international dialling code with the plus sign, and its currency code (for example CAD).

The match must be exact: "Washington" will not find "Washington, D.C." unless it is listed that way, and local spellings (Roma, Wien, Bruxelles) may fail even if the English name works. If no capital matches, or the country has no capital or currency listed, nothing or a dash is shown. Countries with several capitals, or capitals that changed recently, may be listed with only one of them.

Worked example

Enter the capital Ottawa. The tool lowercases the text to "ottawa" and compares it with each capital in the table. The match is the entry for Canada. The tool shows country Canada, dialling code +1 and currency CAD.

Common mistakes

  • Typing the best-known city instead of the capital: Istanbul, Sydney or New York will not return Turkey, Australia or the United States.
  • Using a local-language spelling of the capital rather than the English name.
  • Adding extra words such as "City of" or a country name, which stops the exact match.
  • Thinking the dialling code is a full phone number prefix: some countries, such as the US and Canada, share +1, so the code alone does not identify a country.

About this calculator

This is a quick reference lookup: type in a capital city and get back the country it belongs to, along with practical details like the country's international dialing code and official currency. It covers the world's national capitals, including commonly confused or lesser-known ones (administrative vs. constitutional capitals, capitals that have changed in recent decades, and small or disputed-territory capitals).

Students studying world geography, trivia and quiz-night enthusiasts, travelers double-checking a destination's currency or phone code before a trip, and app or game developers building geography-based content all use lookups like this instead of digging through an atlas or encyclopedia entry by entry.

Capital names with punctuation are the usual snag. The United States entry is stored as Washington, D.C., with the comma and the dots, so a plain Washington will return nothing. The dialling code shown is the country prefix only, and several countries share +1, so use it together with the country name. If a capital you know returns nothing, post the spelling you typed and tell us which country you expected.
