Equity-Based Profit Distribution Calculator

Distribute profit to partners in proportion to their equity stake.

How it is calculated

Each owner's payout is the profit pool times their stake: payout_n = total_profit × equity_n% ÷ 100. The profit is a money amount and each equity figure is a percentage point value (50 means 50%, not 0.5). The three stakes may add up to less than 100; whatever is not claimed is reported as unallocated = total_profit − (payout1 + payout2 + payout3), for example a reserve or an unissued share pool. Stakes that add up to more than 100, a negative profit or any negative percentage return no result. For a two-owner split enter 0 for the third stake. The tool applies plain pro-rata ownership only; it does not model preferred returns, salaries or tax, which depend on your agreement and jurisdiction.

Worked example

A company has $90,000 of distributable profit. Owner 1 holds 50%, owner 2 holds 30% and owner 3 holds 15%. Owner 1 receives 90,000 × 50 ÷ 100 = $45,000.00. Owner 2 receives 90,000 × 30 ÷ 100 = $27,000.00 and owner 3 receives 90,000 × 15 ÷ 100 = $13,500.00.

The stakes total 95%, so the remaining 5% of the pool, $4,500.00, is shown as unallocated.

Common mistakes

  • Typing a stake as a fraction (0.3) instead of a percentage (30). The payout would be a hundredth of what it should be.
  • Entering stakes that add up to more than 100. The tool refuses these, so check that the cap table, including any option pool, does not exceed 100%.
  • Ignoring the unallocated line. If stakes add up to less than 100, that money has not been given to anyone here, so decide whether it is retained or belongs to a fourth owner.
  • Using revenue, or profit before expenses, as the pool. The figure should be the profit you actually intend to distribute.
  • Leaving the third stake empty for two owners. The field needs 0, otherwise there is no result.

About this calculator

Equity-based profit distribution allocates a shared profit pool to each owner strictly in proportion to their ownership percentage — a 30% stakeholder receives 30% of the distributable profit, regardless of hours worked or role, unless the partnership agreement specifies otherwise.

Partnerships, LLCs, and small corporations use this pro-rata method because it is written directly into most operating agreements and cap tables: it is simple to audit, avoids disputes over subjective effort, and mirrors how liability and control are typically also split. It differs from performance-based or role-based distribution models, which some partnerships use instead when contribution is meant to matter more than raw ownership percentage.

Split a profit pool by ownership: enter the total and the equity percentage of up to three partners or shareholders, and each person's exact payout is shown, a quick check before the distribution is final.
