Wave Speed Calculator
Find the wave speed.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool multiplies frequency by wavelength: v = f × λ, where f is the frequency in hertz (cycles per second) and λ is the wavelength in metres. The product is a speed in metres per second, rounded to two decimals. Both fields are required and must be above zero. It works for any wave type, sound, light, radio or water waves, because the relation is the same; what changes is the medium. Convert kilohertz, megahertz, centimetres or nanometres to hertz and metres first, otherwise the result is off by that factor. The speed also tells you nothing about the medium unless you compare it to the known speed there.
Worked example
A note of 440 Hz produces a wave with a measured wavelength of 0.78 m. Multiply: 440 × 0.78 = 343.20 m/s. That is about the speed of sound in air at room temperature, so the numbers are plausible for a sound wave. The same tool also works the other way in your head: at that speed, a wavelength of 0.78 m means 343.2 ÷ 0.78 = 440 cycles per second.
Common mistakes
- Typing the frequency in kHz or MHz without converting. 100 MHz must be entered as 100000000, otherwise the speed is a million times too small.
- Entering the wavelength in centimetres or nanometres. The result is only in m/s if the wavelength is in metres.
- Entering the period or angular frequency (rad/s) instead of frequency in hertz. Angular frequency is 2π times larger and makes the speed 6.28 times too big.
- Using a wavelength measured in one medium with a frequency from another. When a wave crosses into a new medium the frequency stays the same but the wavelength changes.
- Treating the result as a constant of the wave source. The speed is set by the medium, not by the source, so the same source gives different speeds in air and in water.
About this calculator
This calculator finds wave speed using v = f × λ — frequency multiplied by wavelength — the relationship that connects how often a wave oscillates to how far apart its peaks are and how fast it actually travels.
Physics students use it for sound and light problems, while the same formula shows up in acoustics (calculating wavelengths for speaker or room design), optics, and radio engineering (matching antenna length to broadcast frequency).

Test the tool with a wave you already know. An FM station at 100 MHz has a wavelength of about 3 m; typing 100000000 and 3 returns 300,000,000 m/s, the speed of light, so you can see the units behave. If you get a speed far from the medium's known speed, suspect the unit conversion first. What kind of wave are you working with, and how was its wavelength measured?
