How it is calculated

There are two modes. To add VAT to a price excluding tax: tax = net × rate/100 and gross = net + tax. To extract VAT from a price that already includes it: net = gross / (1 + rate/100) and tax = gross - net. The rate is picked from a list of the three Turkish KDV rates, 1%, 10% or 20%; no other rate can be entered. Which one applies depends on the product or service, so check the rate for your item. The amount must not be negative. Results are shown in Turkish lira to two decimals. Other countries use different VAT rates and rules.

Worked example

A product costs 1,000 before tax and the rate is 20%, in add mode. Tax = 1,000 × 0.20 = 200.00 ₺. Gross = 1,000 + 200 = 1,200.00 ₺. The net amount shown is 1,000.00 ₺. In extract mode, entering 1,200 at 20% reverses this: 1,200 / 1.20 = 1,000.00 ₺ net, with 200.00 ₺ of tax.

Common mistakes

  • Extracting VAT by taking 20% of the gross price. That gives 240, but the real tax is 200 because the rate applies to the net price; use extract mode.
  • Choosing add mode for a price that already includes KDV, which charges tax twice.
  • Applying one rate to a whole invoice when its lines carry different KDV rates.
  • Leaving the rate on its default. The list starts at 20%; pick 1% or 10% for goods taxed at those rates.

About this calculator

This calculator adds or removes Turkey's value-added tax, known locally as KDV, from a price, letting you move between a tax-exclusive base price and the tax-inclusive amount a customer actually pays. Because different categories of goods and services can carry different KDV rates, the tool does not assume one rate: you pick 1%, 10% or 20% to match the item.

Small business owners and freelancers in Turkey use it to quote prices correctly on invoices, while shoppers use it to check whether a listed price already includes KDV or not. It is also handy for anyone reverse-engineering a receipt to see how much of the total was tax versus the underlying price of the item.

This tool applies one rate to one amount, so an invoice with lines at different KDV rates should be split: calculate each line on its own and add the results. Enter the rate that applies to your goods, since Turkey uses more than one, and check it against the invoice. Other taxes, such as ÖTV, are not included. Results are shown in Turkish lira. Which rate or invoice type do you handle most?
