Travel Vaccination Timeline Calculator

Enter weeks until your trip and choose a vaccine.

How it is calculated

The tool subtracts a fixed lead time for the chosen vaccine from the weeks left before departure: buffer = weeks until trip − lead time. The lead times built in are: typhoid 1 week, hepatitis A 2 weeks, yellow fever 2 weeks, rabies 4 weeks and Japanese encephalitis 4 weeks. A buffer of 0 or more is shown as On time, and a negative buffer as Too late. Weeks until the trip must be zero or more; a negative value gives no result. If no vaccine is chosen, or one is not on the list, 2 weeks is used. These are simple planning figures, not a vaccine schedule: they do not model multi-dose courses, boosters, your age, health, destination or the rules of a particular clinic, so the doctor or travel clinic decides the real timing.

Worked example

A traveller leaves in 3 weeks and wants the rabies vaccine. The tool's lead time for rabies is 4 weeks. Buffer: 3 − 4 = −1 week, so the status is Too late. Starting at once would leave the course unfinished at departure; the traveller should ask a travel clinic right away what is still possible. With 6 weeks to go the buffer would be 2 weeks and the status On time.

Common mistakes

  • Reading On time as medical clearance. It only compares the weeks entered with one fixed number per vaccine; the clinic sets the real course and the gaps between doses.
  • Counting weeks from the day you book the appointment instead of from the date of the first dose, so the lead time is overstated.
  • Entering months or days in the weeks field; 2 months should be about 8.
  • Forgetting that a vaccine not on the list silently falls back to a 2-week lead time.
  • Assuming a buffer of exactly 0 leaves room for delays or a missed appointment; it means no slack at all.

About this calculator

Many travel vaccines don't provide immediate protection — some require multiple doses spaced weeks apart, and even single-dose vaccines typically need one to four weeks for full immunity to develop, which is why health authorities recommend visiting a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure for destinations requiring vaccination. Leaving it too late can mean arriving at a destination only partially protected, or missing a required dose schedule altogether.

This calculator takes how many weeks remain until your trip and your chosen vaccine, and tells you whether there's still enough lead time to complete the recommended course. It's a practical planning aid for travelers heading to regions requiring vaccines like yellow fever, typhoid, or hepatitis A, and a quick reference for travel clinics and travel medicine nurses advising patients on timing.

The tool handles one vaccine per run. For a trip that needs several, run it once for each and plan around the one with the longest lead time; an On time result for the shortest one says nothing about the others. Clinics can also have waiting lists that make the real start date later than your own plan. Which vaccines would you like to see on the list?
