Road Trip Cost Calculator
Budget the fuel for your next road trip.

How it is calculated
The tool estimates fuel only, working in kilometres, litres per 100 km and price per litre. It first finds the litres burned, then prices them: fuel cost = distance ÷ 100 × consumption × price, and cost per km = fuel cost ÷ distance. Both results are rounded to two decimals in the tool's default currency, so the per-km figure is only accurate to the cent. All three boxes are required: leaving the price empty gives no result, as do a distance or consumption of zero or less and a negative price. For a round trip, enter the full distance out and back. Tolls, parking, food and lodging are not included, and neither are changes in consumption caused by hills, speed or load.
Worked example
A trip of 450 km in a car that uses 7.2 L/100 km, with fuel at 1.65 per litre. Litres needed: 450 ÷ 100 × 7.2 = 32.4 litres. Fuel cost: 32.4 × 1.65 = 53.46, shown as $53.46. Cost per km: 53.46 ÷ 450 = 0.1188, shown as $0.12. If you drive back the same way, enter 900 km and the fuel cost doubles to 106.92.
Common mistakes
- Entering the one-way distance for a return journey. The fuel cost is for the distance you type, so a round trip needs the out-and-back total.
- Typing miles into the kilometre box. A 300-mile drive is about 483 km, and entering 300 understates the cost by roughly 38 %.
- Using the manufacturer's consumption rating for a loaded car on a motorway. Luggage, roof boxes, air conditioning and speeds above 120 km/h usually push real consumption higher.
- Using the price from your home town for the whole route. Fuel prices differ between regions and countries, so take an average of where you will fill up.
- Forgetting that the result is fuel alone, so tolls, ferries, parking and wear on the car must be added separately.
About this calculator
The core of a road trip’s fuel budget is straightforward arithmetic: multiply the total distance (in units of 100 km) by your vehicle’s fuel consumption in liters per 100 km to get the amount of fuel needed, then multiply by the current price per liter — cost = (distance ÷ 100) × consumption × price. A 900km trip in a car that does 8L/100km at $1.60/L, for example, works out to 72 liters and about $115 in fuel.
Travelers use this calculation to compare route options (a longer highway route can sometimes cost less in fuel than a shorter but hillier one, since fuel economy drops on grades), to split gas costs fairly among passengers, and to sanity-check whether driving or flying is the cheaper option for a given trip. Logistics companies and rideshare drivers run the same math at scale to estimate fuel expenses across many trips and price rides or deliveries accordingly.
