How it is calculated
Driving time is distance ÷ average speed in hours. Stop time is number of stops × minutes per stop ÷ 60 hours. The total is driving time plus stop time. Each result is displayed as hours and minutes, with minutes rounded to the nearest whole minute. Distance and speed must use matching units, such as kilometers and km/h or miles and mph, and the tool does not convert between them. Speed must be greater than zero, and distance, stops and minutes per stop cannot be negative. If you leave the stops or minutes fields empty, they are treated as zero, so the total then equals the driving time. The tool uses one constant average speed; it does not model traffic, slower roads or hours-of-service rules.
Worked example
You will drive 450 km at an average of 80 km/h with 3 stops of 20 minutes each. Driving time: 450 ÷ 80 = 5.625 hours, which is 5 hours and 37.5 minutes, rounded to 5h 38m. Stops: 3 × 20 = 60 minutes, or 1 hour. Total: 5.625 + 1 = 6.625 hours, shown as 6h 38m. If you leave at 08:00, you can expect to arrive at about 14:38.
Common mistakes
- Using the speed limit as the average speed. Towns, junctions, fuel and traffic bring the real average well below the limit.
- Mixing units, such as distance in miles with speed in km/h. The tool gives a wrong answer without any warning.
- Entering the total stop time in the minutes-per-stop field. That field is per stop, so 3 stops of 20 minutes is 3 and 20, not 60.
- Forgetting overnight rests on a long trip. The result is continuous elapsed time and does not include sleep or hotel nights.
- Reading 5h 38m as 5.38 hours. The part after the h is minutes, so 5h 38m is 5.63 hours.
About this calculator
This calculator adds up the two components of any long drive: pure driving time (distance ÷ average speed) and the time spent off the road at rest stops, meals and fuel breaks. Multiplying the number of planned stops by the minutes per stop and adding that to the driving time gives a realistic total trip duration, not just an optimistic drive-time estimate.
It's a practical planning tool for road trips, delivery routes and long commutes, helping you set a believable departure time and arrival time before you actually hit the road.

The result is elapsed time, not a clock time, so add it to your departure yourself: leave at 07:00 with 7h 8m total and you arrive around 14:08. For a realistic average speed, divide the route distance by the driving hours a navigation app predicts for the same route rather than using the highway limit. What distance and average speed are you planning around?
