Token Vesting Calculator

Track how many of your tokens are unlocked at any point in a vesting schedule.

How it is calculated

The vested amount depends on where you are in the schedule. Before the cliff (months_elapsed < cliff_months) nothing has vested. From the cliff onward vested = total_tokens × months_elapsed ÷ vesting_months, so the cliff period is paid out in one jump and the rest follows in equal monthly steps. From vesting_months on, everything has vested. locked = total − vested, vested_pct = vested ÷ total × 100 and monthly_unlock = total ÷ vesting_months. Vesting months is the length of the whole schedule, cliff included (a 12-month cliff inside a 48-month schedule, not 48 months after the cliff). The cliff cannot be longer than the schedule. Token counts are shown as whole numbers, and months can be decimals.

Worked example

A grant of 1,200,000 tokens has a 12-month cliff and a 48-month schedule. After 30 months we are past the cliff, so vested = 1,200,000 × 30 ÷ 48 = 750,000 tokens, which is 62.50%. Locked: 1,200,000 − 750,000 = 450,000. Monthly unlock: 1,200,000 ÷ 48 = 25,000 tokens.

At month 11 the result would be 0 vested, and at month 12 it would jump to 300,000 (25.00%).

Common mistakes

  • Entering the vesting period as the time after the cliff. The field is the total schedule length including the cliff, so a 1-year cliff plus 3 more years is 48, not 36.
  • Expecting vesting to start at month 1. Before the cliff the tool shows 0 vested, and at the cliff the whole accumulated share (25% in a 12-of-48 schedule) appears at once.
  • Counting months from the token launch date instead of from the grant's start date. Elapsed months must be measured from when this particular vesting schedule began.
  • Confusing vested with sellable. Vested means earned; exchange listings, lock-ups or legal restrictions may still stop you from selling.
  • Using the tool for schedules that release in tranches (for example quarterly steps) or have several cliffs. It models one cliff and smooth monthly vesting only.

About this calculator

Token vesting is how startups, DAOs, and crypto projects gradually release equity or token allocations to team members, founders, and investors over time instead of handing everything over at once. The most common structure combines a cliff — a period (commonly 12 months) during which nothing vests at all — with linear vesting afterward, where the remaining tokens unlock in equal amounts month by month (or day by day) until the full schedule (commonly 36 or 48 months total) is complete.

If someone leaves before the cliff, they typically walk away with nothing from that grant; once past the cliff, they've already earned the cliff portion (often 25% for a 1-year cliff on a 4-year schedule) in one jump, after which the rest trickles in gradually.

This structure exists to align long-term incentives: it discourages team members from leaving (or investors from dumping tokens) right after launch, since walking away early forfeits a large share of unvested tokens, while projects and investors use vesting calculators like this one to track exactly how many tokens are unlocked and available at any point in time.
