Resolution Standard Lookup

Enter a resolution name or pixel dimensions to look up its details.

How it is calculated

In name mode the tool looks the text up (ignoring case and spaces) in a built-in table of seven names: 720p (1280 × 720), 1080p (1920 × 1080), 1440p and 2K (both 2560 × 1440), 4K (3840 × 2160), 8K (7680 × 4320) and VGA (640 × 480). In pixel mode it matches an exact size such as 1920x1080 (the letter x, × or * all work) against the same list. From width w and height h it computes megapixels = w × h ÷ 1,000,000 and the aspect ratio as w ÷ g : h ÷ g, where g is the greatest common divisor. A name or size not in the table returns nothing; the tool does not calculate for arbitrary dimensions.

Worked example

Look up 4K. The table gives 3840 × 2160, shown as 3,840 × 2,160. Megapixels: 3840 × 2160 = 8,294,400, divided by 1,000,000 is 8.29 MP. Aspect ratio: the greatest common divisor of 3840 and 2160 is 240, so 3840 ÷ 240 = 16 and 2160 ÷ 240 = 9, giving 16:9.

Common mistakes

  • Typing 2160p or Full HD. These are common names for 4K and 1080p, but only the seven names in the table are recognised, so use 4K or 1080p instead.
  • Entering a non-standard size such as 1366x768 in pixel mode. Only the listed standard sizes match; anything else returns nothing, so work out megapixels yourself for custom sizes.
  • Expecting the result to say which is 1440p and which is 2K. Both names are the same 2560 × 1440 grid.
  • Confusing video 4K (3840 × 2160, as used here) with cinema DCI 4K (4096 × 2160). The table has only the 16:9 consumer size.

About this calculator

Display resolution standards give a memorable name — like 720p, 1080p, or 4K — to a fixed pixel grid, such as 1920×1080. Beyond the pixel count itself, two derived numbers describe a resolution: megapixels (width × height ÷ 1,000,000) and aspect ratio (the width-to-height ratio reduced to its simplest form, e.g. 16:9).

Video editors, photographers, and display or camera manufacturers need to move quickly between a resolution’s name and its raw pixel dimensions — checking whether a 4K source (3840×2160) matches a project’s aspect ratio, or what megapixel count a given resolution implies. This tool looks up a resolution by name (720p, 1080p, 1440p, 2K, 4K, 8K or VGA) or by pixel dimensions (it recognises exactly six sizes: 1280×720, 1920×1080, 2560×1440, 3840×2160, 7680×4320 and 640×480) and returns the matching details. Other names, such as Full HD or 2160p, and other sizes are not found.

The lookup knows seven names and only exact sizes. 2K returns 2,560 × 1,440, 3.69 MP and 16:9, the same as 1440p, because that is how this table defines it; cinema 2K is a different, smaller format. A laptop panel such as 1366x768 returns nothing in pixel mode. Which resolution names or odd screen sizes would you like the table to include?
