How it is calculated
The dose is the water weight divided by the second number of the brew ratio: coffee (g) = water (g) ÷ X for a ratio of 1:X. Water is entered in grams, treating 1 mL of water as 1 g, which is close enough at brewing temperatures. If the ratio is left empty the tool uses 1:16. The coffee dose is shown to one decimal gram, and the water is shown rounded to a whole number of grams, so 350.5 g appears as 351 g even though the exact value is used in the division. The ratio line shows the ratio you entered, with decimals kept (15.5 appears as 1:15.5). Water and ratio must be above zero, otherwise there is no result. The tool does not account for the water the grounds absorb, so the amount in the cup will be less than the water poured.
Worked example
You want to brew with 500 g of water at a ratio of 1:17. Coffee dose: 500 ÷ 17 = 29.41 g, which the tool shows as 29.4 g. The water line repeats 500 g and the ratio is displayed as 1:17. A scale that reads to the nearest gram would have you weigh 29 g or 30 g. Using 1:16 on the same water would give 31.3 g, a visibly stronger cup.
Common mistakes
- Typing the ratio as 16:1 or as 1:16 into the field. The field takes only the second number, so enter 16, not 1:16. A flipped ratio such as 1:0.0625 would suggest absurd doses.
- Measuring the water in a measuring cup in millilitres and then the coffee in scoops. The tool works in weight; use a scale for both.
- Expecting the final cup to contain all of the water entered. The grounds hold back part of the water, so a 500 g pour does not yield 500 g of coffee.
- Changing the dose to fix the taste without noting the ratio. Change the ratio, grind size or pour speed one at a time so you know which move helped.
- Reading the rounded water line as the exact amount. It is rounded to whole grams for display, so for 350.5 g it says 351 g; pour the figure you typed.
About this calculator
Pour-over brewing (V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave) is dosed by weight, not volume, because coffee density varies with roast and grind — the standard is a brew ratio expressed as 1:X, meaning 1 gram of coffee for every X grams of water. This calculator inverts that: given the water you want to brew and your chosen ratio, it divides the water weight by X to tell you exactly how many grams of ground coffee to dose.
The Specialty Coffee Association’s general guidance sits around a 1:15 to 1:18 ratio, with 1:16 or 1:17 a common starting point for pour-over — stronger cups move toward 1:14–1:15, lighter cups toward 1:17–1:18. Home baristas and café staff use this kind of ratio math to keep extraction consistent every time they brew, then adjust grind size and pour rate to dial in taste rather than guessing at the dose.

The dose shown is ground coffee, but the grounds hold back some of the water you pour. If you want a particular weight of coffee in the cup, enter a bit more water than that target. On a scale that reads 0.1 g, 250 g of water at 1:16 gives 15.6 g, so it is worth weighing the dose rather than eyeballing a scoop. What ratio do you settle on for your usual brewer?
