Butter Converter

Convert butter measurements for any recipe.

How it is calculated

Whatever unit you choose is first converted to grams using fixed US factors: 1 tbsp = 14.1748 g, 1 stick = 113.398 g, 1 cup = 226.796 g. The gram value is then divided by each factor to give tablespoons, sticks and cups, so the formula is result = (amount × factor of input unit) ÷ factor of target unit. One stick equals 8 tablespoons or half a cup. Results use two decimals. The factors describe US butter measures; other countries' tablespoons or cups differ slightly, and negative amounts are rejected. This is weight-based conversion, so it is not valid for melted or whipped butter measured by volume.

Worked example

You have a recipe asking for 2 sticks. In grams that is 2 × 113.398 = 226.796, shown as 226.80 g. Dividing by the tablespoon factor, 226.796 ÷ 14.1748 gives 16.00 tablespoons. Dividing by the stick factor gives 2.00 sticks, and dividing by the cup factor 226.796 ÷ 226.796 gives 1.00 cup. So 2 sticks is 226.80 g, 16 tablespoons or 1 cup.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a stick as a cup: one US stick is only half a cup, or 8 tablespoons.
  • Using European 250 g butter blocks as if they were 2 sticks; 2 sticks are about 227 g, so a small gap remains.
  • Measuring softened or melted butter by volume in a cup, which packs differently than cold butter.
  • Mixing up US tablespoons with other countries' tablespoons, which are a different size.

About this calculator

This calculator converts butter measurements between grams, US sticks (each stick = 113g = 8 tablespoons = ½ cup), tablespoons, and cups, using the standard US baking convention where butter sticks are pre-marked with tablespoon lines.

Home bakers following recipes written in different measurement systems — a US recipe calling for "1 stick" versus a European recipe in grams — use it to avoid measuring errors that can throw off a dough or batter's texture.

American recipes count butter in sticks, and one stick is 113 g (4 oz), while many European and Turkish packs are 250 g, which is about 2.2 sticks. The factors here are fixed by weight, so the tablespoon and cup results are standard measures, not a scoop from a tub of soft butter. Enter the pack size you buy and read the stick count.
