NFT Royalty Calculator

See exactly how an NFT resale price splits between the creator, marketplace, and seller.

How it is calculated

Both the creator royalty and the marketplace fee are taken as a percentage of the sale price, not of each other. royalty = sale_price × royalty% ÷ 100, platform_fee = sale_price × fee% ÷ 100, seller_proceeds = sale_price − royalty − platform_fee and seller_profit = seller_proceeds − original_price. The original price is what the seller paid to acquire the NFT; enter 0 if you minted it and want profit to equal proceeds. Prices are shown with a dollar sign and two decimals, so convert crypto amounts to a currency value first, or treat the dollar figures as a plain unit. The two percentages together cannot exceed 100 and the sale price must be above zero. Gas fees, currency conversion and taxes are not included, and whether the royalty is actually paid depends on the marketplace.

Worked example

An NFT sells for $2,000 on resale. The creator royalty is 5% and the marketplace fee is 2.5%. Royalty: 2,000 × 5% = $100.00. Marketplace fee: 2,000 × 2.5% = $50.00. Seller proceeds: 2,000 − 100 − 50 = $1,850.00. The seller originally paid $1,200, so profit is 1,850 − 1,200 = $650.00.

The seller keeps 92.5% of the sale price before gas fees and taxes.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the percentages the wrong way, such as taking the marketplace fee from the amount left after the royalty. Here both are taken from the full sale price, so check how your marketplace defines them.
  • Entering a price in ETH and reading the dollar sign as dollars. The tool just formats numbers, so convert to one currency first or read the figures in your own unit.
  • Leaving out the original price when you want profit. With 0 the profit equals the proceeds, which overstates your gain if you paid something for the NFT.
  • Forgetting gas and network fees. They are not in this calculation, so real proceeds will be lower.
  • Assuming royalties are always enforced. The tool shows what the percentage would be, but some marketplaces make royalties optional, so the amount actually paid can be less.

About this calculator

An NFT royalty is a percentage of a secondary sale price that automatically routes back to the original creator, typically enforced either on-chain through a standard like EIP-2981 or off-chain by the marketplace's own smart contract logic. On top of the creator royalty, the marketplace itself takes a separate cut — commonly around 2.5% on platforms like OpenSea — before the remainder goes to the seller.

Digital artists and Web3 creators rely on royalties as an ongoing revenue stream beyond the initial mint or first sale, since a piece that appreciates and trades hands multiple times can generate meaningful recurring income for the original creator — a mechanism that does not exist for traditional physical or print art resales.
