Franchise Royalty Fee Calculator

How much of your franchise revenue goes to royalty and ad-fund fees?

How it is calculated

Both fees are charged on gross revenue before any of your own costs. The tool calculates royalty = gross revenue × royalty % / 100 and ad fund = gross revenue × ad-fund % / 100, adds them to get the total fees, and subtracts the total from revenue: net revenue = gross revenue − royalty − ad fund. The effective rate is total fees / gross revenue × 100, which equals the sum of the two percentages. Revenue is a dollar amount for the period you choose, and the fees come out for the same period. Net revenue here is what remains before rent, wages, cost of goods and tax, so it is not profit. The two percentages together cannot exceed 100, and leaving the ad-fund field empty gives no result, so enter 0 if your agreement has none. One-off franchise or renewal fees are not included.

Worked example

Annual gross revenue 600,000, royalty 6 %, ad fund 2 %. Step 1: royalty = 600,000 × 0.06 = $36,000.00. Step 2: ad fund = 600,000 × 0.02 = $12,000.00. Step 3: total fees = 36,000 + 12,000 = $48,000.00. Step 4: net revenue = 600,000 − 48,000 = $552,000.00. Step 5: effective rate = 48,000 / 600,000 = 8.00%, so eight cents of every sales dollar go to the franchisor and the ad pool.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the net revenue figure as profit. It is only revenue after the two franchise fees; rent, labour and product costs still have to come out of it.
  • Applying the royalty to profit instead of gross sales. The percentage fees in this tool are charged on gross revenue, so entering net sales understates what you pay.
  • Forgetting the ad-fund or technology fee line in the agreement. The tool needs a value in each field, and a missing 2 % changes the effective rate by that much.
  • Mixing periods, such as monthly sales with annual fee amounts. Revenue and the fees you compare to the result should cover the same period.
  • Comparing two brands on royalty rate alone. Different ad-fund rates and fees on sales categories change the effective rate, so compare the effective percentage shown.

About this calculator

Most franchise agreements charge two ongoing fees calculated as a percentage of gross sales, not net profit: a royalty fee, typically 4–8%, paid to the franchisor for the right to use the brand and system, and a marketing or ad-fund fee, typically 1–3%, pooled across franchisees to pay for national or regional advertising. Both are deducted before the franchisee's own operating costs — rent, labor, cost of goods — come out.

Prospective franchisees run this calculation while comparing franchise disclosure documents (FDDs) from different brands, because a lower up-front franchise fee can be offset by a higher ongoing royalty rate, and the combined percentage taken off gross sales directly determines how much margin is left for the franchisee to cover costs and take home as profit.

With your projected gross sales, royalty rate and ad-fund rate entered, you see the dollar amount owed for each fee and the revenue remaining after both are deducted, so you can compare franchise opportunities on an apples-to-apples basis.
