Min/Mile to Min/Km Converter

Enter your pace in minutes and seconds, then choose the direction.

Result

5:54/km
5.9030 min/km

How it is calculated

The tool first turns your pace into decimal minutes: t = min + sec / 60. For minutes per mile to minutes per kilometre it computes t / 1.609344; for the opposite direction it computes t × 1.609344, because one mile is 1.609344 km. The result is rounded to the nearest whole second before being split into minutes and seconds, so a pace never prints as something like 4:60. It shows both the mm:ss pace and the decimal minutes to four places. The total pace must be above zero. Seconds above 59 are simply added (4 min 60 sec is treated as 5:00), and a negative seconds value is subtracted.

Worked example

Your pace is 9 min 30 sec per mile. Decimal minutes: 9 + 30 / 60 = 9.5. Divide by 1.609344: 9.5 / 1.609344 = 5.9030 minutes per km. The fractional part 0.9030 × 60 = 54.2 seconds, which rounds to 54. The pace is 5:54/km. In the other direction, 5:30 per km becomes 5.5 × 1.609344 = 8.8514 minutes, or 8:51 per mile.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong direction. A 9:30 mile pace is about 5:54 per km; a 9:30 km pace would be over 15 minutes per mile.
  • Typing a decimal into the minutes box, such as 9.5 for 9:30. Put 9 in minutes and 30 in seconds, or 9.5 in minutes and 0 in seconds.
  • Reading 5.9030 as 5:90. The decimal line is minutes in tenths, not minutes and seconds.
  • Assuming that a faster-looking number is faster. A lower number per km is not comparable to a number per mile until it is converted.
  • Applying it to speed. This converts pace (time per distance), not km/h or mph.

About this calculator

Running pace is expressed differently depending on the measurement system — minutes per mile in the US and UK, minutes per kilometer almost everywhere else — and converting between them uses the fixed distance relationship 1 mile = 1.60934 km: pace(min/km) = pace(min/mile) ÷ 1.60934, and the inverse to go the other way, with the minutes-and-seconds format converted to decimal minutes first.

This calculator takes a pace in minutes and seconds and a conversion direction, and returns the equivalent pace in the other unit. Runners training with a mile-based watch or app but racing a kilometer-based event (or vice versa) use it to translate their goal pace into whatever unit their GPS watch or race pacing chart displays, and coaches use it to write training plans that work for athletes coming from countries that use different pace conventions.

Once you have the converted pace, split times are easy: 5:00 per km is 2:00 for a 400 m lap, and the same effort is about 8:03 per mile. The tool converts only the pace, so it will not give you a finish time. Multiply by the race distance yourself, and remember the result is rounded to the nearest second, which adds up over a long race. Which distance are you training for, and does your watch report pace in miles or kilometres by default?
