Speed to Pace Calculator
Know exactly how fast each kilometre should feel.

How it is calculated
Pace is the time needed to cover one kilometre, so it is the reciprocal of speed. The input is the speed in km/h. The tool computes pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed and then pace per mile = pace per km × 1.609, because a mile is about 1.609 km. The decimal minutes are converted to whole seconds and shown as minutes:seconds, rounded to the nearest second. The speed must be above zero, and there is no upper limit, so a speed that no runner could keep still returns a number. The tool reads only km/h: for a treadmill or bike computer set to miles per hour, convert to km/h first by multiplying by 1.609.
Worked example
Your treadmill is set to 10.5 km/h. Pace per kilometre: 60 ÷ 10.5 = 5.714 minutes. The fractional part is 0.714 × 60 = 42.9 seconds, so 5 minutes and 43 seconds, shown as 5:43 /km. Pace per mile: 5.714 × 1.609 = 9.194 minutes, which is 9 minutes and 11.6 seconds, rounded to 9:12 /mi. If you increase the treadmill by 1 km/h to 11.5, the pace falls to 5:13 per km.
Common mistakes
- Entering the treadmill speed in miles per hour. The field is km/h, so 6.5 mph must be converted to about 10.5 km/h first.
- Reading the pace as a decimal. A pace of 5:43 means 5 minutes 43 seconds, not 5.43 minutes.
- Expecting a straight-line relationship. Pace and speed are inverse: adding 1 km/h at a slow speed changes the pace much more than adding 1 km/h at a fast one.
- Applying a treadmill's pace to outdoor running without checking the incline. Treadmill speed and outdoor GPS speed are not always equal effort.
- Mixing up the two lines: the first is per kilometre and the second per mile, and the mile pace is always the larger number.
About this calculator
Speed and pace are inverse ways of describing the same motion: speed measures distance covered per unit of time (km/h), while pace measures time needed per unit of distance (minutes per kilometer or per mile). Converting between them is a simple reciprocal relationship: pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h), so a treadmill speed of 12 km/h corresponds to a pace of exactly 5:00 per kilometer.
Runners think in pace during a race — checking a watch mid-run to see if they’re holding, say, a 5:30/km pace — but treadmills and cycling computers almost always display speed instead, which is why this conversion comes up constantly when translating a treadmill setting into a race-pace target, or when comparing a GPS watch’s speed readout against a known goal pace for an upcoming 10K or marathon. Coaches also use it to convert lab-tested speed thresholds (like the speed at lactate threshold) into the pace language runners actually train and race by.
